Chelsea legend John Terry moves to purchase English club with 3 Nigerian stars

Former Chelsea captain John Terry is set to take his first major step into football ownership, with reports suggesting the Chelsea legend is leading a £14 million move to buy Colchester United, Afrik-Foot understands.

The 45-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of his generation, is part of a consortium in advanced talks to take control of the League Two side, as per the Mirror. Current owner Robbie Cowling confirmed discussions are ongoing, although he stopped short of naming those involved.

Terry’s move follows a growing trend of high-profile names investing in lower-league clubs. Figures such as Ryan Reynolds at Wrexham AFC and Tom Brady at Birmingham City have shown how fresh ownership can transform a club’s fortunes.

If completed, Terry is expected to play a key role in shaping football decisions at Colchester, who are currently sitting in mid-table in EFL League Two. The club has a proud history, including their famous FA Cup victory over Leeds United in 1971, but they have not lifted major silverware since winning the FA Trophy in 1992.

Terry himself enjoyed a glittering career at Chelsea FC, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2012. Since retiring in 2018, he has worked in coaching roles, including at academy level, and recently completed a FIFA diploma in club management, experience that could prove vital if he steps into ownership.

Nigerian talents in focus at Terry’s Colchester

Beyond the takeover story, Colchester’s squad includes three players with strong Nigerian ties, offering an added layer of interest for fans back home.

One of them is Romeo Akachukwu, a young attacking midfielder currently on loan from Southampton FC. Still only 19, he is known for his creativity, technical skill and ability to score from midfield. Before arriving in England, he made headlines with a hat-trick for Waterford.

Another is Adrian Akande, a quick and direct winger who developed through top academies, including those of Chelsea and Crystal Palace. The 22-year-old joined Colchester in 2025 and has since spent time on loan gaining valuable first-team experience, working on his pace, dribbling and final delivery.

Completing the trio is Samson Tovide, a powerful striker who has come through Colchester’s own academy. Standing over six feet tall, he offers strength, aerial ability and hold-up play. This season, he has contributed goals and assists, making him an important part of the team’s attack.
