Real reason Chelsea-bound Nigeria wonderkid Abdulmuiz Adeleke will start at Strasbourg

Abdulmuiz Adeleke’s rise from Sporting Supreme FC to the attention of Chelsea and Strasbourg took another major step forward at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 17-year-old striker finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals and helped Nigeria’s Flying Eagles reach the final. His goals came in two group games and the final, as he became the first Nigerian male player to officially win the competition’s Golden Boot.

Adeleke’s performances have also added more interest to a planned move linked to BlueCo, the ownership group that controls both English Premier League club Chelsea and French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

Yet the current plan is not for Adeleke to go straight to Stamford Bridge. Instead, the young forward is expected to join Strasbourg in France in the summer of 2027. There is a clear reason behind that route, and it is linked to his age and Britain’s work permit rules.

Adeleke: Why Strasbourg comes before Chelsea

Adeleke gave European scouts plenty to study during Nigeria’s run in Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria eventually lost the final 4-1, ending its hopes of winning the WAFU B title and also missing automatic qualification for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. Adeleke, however, finished the tournament with the Golden Boot.

His performances came after he had already attracted attention from BlueCo. The teenager previously travelled to Europe for developmental trials and trained with both Chelsea and Strasbourg. That experience gave the BlueCo clubs the opportunity to assess him closely before deciding on the next stage of his development.

The key issue is that Adeleke cannot simply sign for Chelsea and start playing Premier League football immediately. At 17, he is still below the age at which FIFA normally allows an international transfer, subject to the limited exceptions in the regulations. That means he must continue his development with Sporting Supreme FC in Nigeria until he turns 18.

There is also a second problem once he becomes eligible to move. Adeleke would not automatically meet the requirements for a UK Governing Body Endorsement, commonly known as a GBE, which is needed for a player from outside the UK to obtain the permission required to play professional football in England.

That makes Strasbourg a more practical first destination. Rather than trying to place the teenager directly into Chelsea’s first-team system, the BlueCo model can give him a pathway through Strasbourg. The French club competes in Ligue 1, one of Europe’s major domestic leagues, allowing Adeleke to continue his development at a high level while building experience that could improve his chances of eventually qualifying for the requirements needed to play in England.

The proposed timeline therefore has two stages. Adeleke is expected to stay with Sporting Supreme FC until he turns 18, with the planned European move coming in the summer of 2027. Strasbourg would then become his first destination under the BlueCo structure.

Chelsea would sit further along the pathway rather than being his immediate destination. That route also gives Adeleke time to adjust to European football, stronger opposition, a new country and the demands of playing at senior level.

The immediate target, therefore, is Strasbourg, not Stamford Bridge. If Adeleke develops as expected in France and satisfies the requirements for a future move to England, Chelsea could eventually become the next step in his BlueCo journey.
