Super Eagles of Nigeria have handed a late call-up to Chibuike Nwaiwu following the withdrawal of Calvin Bassey, Afrik Foot reports.
The Trabzonspor centre-back will link up with Eric Chelle’s squad in Antalya, Turkey, ahead of friendlies against Iran and Jordan.
1. A towering presence at the back
Standing at 1.93 meters (6’4″), Nwaiwu brings an imposing physical profile to the heart of the defence.

His dominance in aerial duels, timing in the tackles, and composure under pressure have already marked him out as a modern centre-back built for the highest level.
At Trabzonspor, those attributes have translated into regular minutes and match-winning contributions from set-pieces — a dimension few defenders at his age can offer.
2. Maiden senior Super Eagles call-up
This invitation represents Nwaiwu’s first involvement with the senior national team.
He was previously called up to the Nigeria U-23 squad for the 2024 Summer Olympics qualifying campaign against Guinea in March 2023, but this is his chance to prove he belongs among the country’s established defenders.
3. Born and bred in Port Harcourt
Nwaiwu was born on 23 July 2003 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. His journey from the grassroots in Nigeria’s oil-rich south to the European stage is a pathway many young Nigerian players dream of but few manage to complete.

He trained at the Borussia Digital Sporting Academy in his youth before breaking into senior football.
4. Rise through football’s levels
Few Nigerian defenders have climbed this fast. Nwaiwu began his senior career at Heartland FC in Owerri in 2021 before moving to Enyimba in October 2022.
A transfer to Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC followed in September 2024, and by January 2026, Trabzonspor had signed him for a reported €5.5 million.
In roughly four and a half years, he has gone from Nigeria’s domestic league to one of Europe’s most competitive top flights—and attracted interest from the likes of PSG, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille, and Leeds United along the way.
5. An NPFL champion at 19
Nwaiwu was a key part of the Enyimba squad that won the 2022–23 Nigeria Professional Football League title.
Over 43 appearances for the Aba-based club, he developed into one of the most talked-about young defenders in Nigerian football, earning a reputation for anchoring the backline and enabling attacking players to thrive.
6. A cup winner in Austria
His time at Wolfsberger AC was not just a stepping stone; it was a trophy-winning campaign.
Nwaiwu started in the final as Wolfsberger defeated Hartberg 1–0 to lift the 2024–25 Austrian Cup, the club’s first-ever domestic trophy.
Across 45 appearances in Austria, he scored five goals and cemented his credentials as a defender comfortable in European competition, including featuring in UEFA Conference League playoff matches.
7. Making an immediate impact in Turkey
Since arriving at Trabzonspor in January, Nwaiwu has wasted no time. He has featured in 12 matches across all competitions, contributing two goals and one assist.
A standout moment came against Fatih Karagümrük in February, when he scored twice in a 3–1 win and was voted man of the match by supporters via the club’s NFC jersey technology.
With Trabzonspor pushing for the Süper Lig title, Nwaiwu has quickly become a fixture in their backline alongside compatriot Paul Onuachu.
8. Tactical versatility beyond centre-back
Although primarily deployed in central defence—where the bulk of his career appearances have come—Nwaiwu has also featured 28 times as a defensive midfielder throughout his career.
His dual capability provides his coaches with genuine tactical flexibility, a valuable asset in a squad that values adaptability.
Under Chelle, whose system prioritises building play from the back, Nwaiwu’s comfort on the ball could be a significant asset.
9. Part of Nigeria’s defensive future
The Super Eagles’ backline is in a period of transition. With William Troost-Ekong’s exit and Chelle actively scouting new options, Nwaiwu represents a new generation of defenders—along with the likes of Emmanuel Fernandez and Igoh Ogbu— looking to establish themselves.

At just 22, his ceiling remains high, and consistent performances at the European level present him a strong case for long-term inclusion.
10. Perfect timing and familiar surroundings
The circumstances of this call-up could hardly be better suited to Nwaiwu. With the friendlies taking place in Turkey, where he is already based, there is no long journey or adjustment period to contend with.
He will also link up with Trabzonspor teammate Paul Onuachu, the current Süper Lig top scorer, which should ease his integration into the group.
