FC Cincinnati suffered a major setback when Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem was forced off with an injury in their home clash against Los Angeles FC at TQL Stadium.
The loss of the star centre-back significantly impacted Cincinnati’s rhythm, ultimately leading to a 2-1 defeat that saw them drop to third place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Awaziem’s injury came in just the 32nd minute, and it was a worrying sight for the team.
The Nigerian international went down to the ground without any contact, clutching his leg in visible pain after stretching for a progressive pass.
Despite trying to push through, Awaziem had to signal for assistance and was subsequently substituted, with Alvas Powell taking his place on the field.
LAFC capitalises on Cincinnati’s loss of momentum
Barely moments after Awaziem was taken off, LAFC wasted no time in taking their chances.
David Martinez broke through Cincinnati’s defence, firing a shot that left goalkeeper Roman Celentano with no chance.
LAFC took a 1-0 lead, and the atmosphere in the stadium noticeably shifted.
Though FC Cincinnati managed to level the score when Luca Orellano’s effort was deflected by club legend Kei Kamara—an own goal—it wasn’t enough to shake LAFC’s dominance.
Denis Bouanga restored LAFC’s lead in the 73rd minute with a brilliant strike from a tight angle, securing all three points for the visitors.
Cincinnati left shaken as Awaziem's status remains unclear
Before his untimely exit, Awaziem had been solid, with 37 touches, 26 accurate passes, and a few crucial defensive contributions, including interceptions and clearances.
His absence was clearly felt as Cincinnati’s defence crumbled under pressure, and head coach Pat Noonan was left with few answers following the match.
Though Noonan offered no update on Awaziem’s injury, leaving fans anxiously awaiting news ahead of their next game against New York City FC.
With their key defender sidelined, Cincinnati will have to find a way to regroup and keep their playoff hopes alive.
