Chuba Akpom: Super Eagles hopeful’s future in the balance despite permanent Ipswich Town deal

Published on by

Nigerian attacker Chuba Akpom could be shown the door at Ipswich Town this summer in what could be an interesting transfer drama, Afrik-Foot reports.

Akpom joined Ipswich from Ajax on a season-long loan last summer.

At the time, the 30-year-old was a hot prospect. Just two seasons prior, he set the Championship alight with 28 goals and two assists in 38 appearances for Middlesbrough, which earned him the move to Ajax.

So when he signed for Ipswich last summer, a conditional “obligation to buy” clause was added to his contract. This was meant to see the deal become permanent if he played in 40% of Ipswich Town’s games and they secured promotion.

Eventually, they finished the Championship campaign in second place, thereby sealing automatic promotion. And with his 29 appearances, Akpom’s permanent move was triggered.

However, there is a strong possibility that the Arsenal academy product will still exit Portman Road this summer.

Why Chuba Akpom Could Leave Ipswich Town

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, there is a possibility that Chuba Akpom will leave Ipswich Town this summer.

Although the Nigerian made 29 appearances in the Championship last season, he barely started matches, registering just two goals and two assists.

Manager Kieran McKenna used him sparingly all season, a clear indication that he is not seen as a key player for the club.

As the Tractor Boys prepare for life in the Premier League, they will definitely be busy in the transfer market this summer. They will have to sign players who can compete at the level required in the English top flight.

The club will also need to offload some players to make space for new arrivals and bring in extra cash to keep their financial books balanced.

A player like Akpom, who was only a squad player last season, will definitely be one of the players who could leave.

As of now, there are no reports of clubs interested in signing Akpom, but he will certainly have an interesting summer ahead.

The former Arsenal man was born in England to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to represent any of the two countries. Although he played for England at youth level, he has since announced his desire to play for the Super Eagles. Unfortunately for him, a call-up has never come.
