Coventry City agree deal to sign Taiwo Awoniyi – What we know

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to leave Nottingham Forest for newly promoted Premier League rivals Coventry City, Afrik-Foot reports.

Coming into this summer, he had just one year left on his contract, and there was no talk of an extension. Recall that he originally joined from Union Berlin in 2022 in a deal worth €20.5 million, arriving as a marquee signing.

In his first two years, he was key in helping the club stay afloat in the English top flight, producing brilliant goalscoring runs at the tail end of the campaign. However, he later lost his place in the starting eleven due to frequent injury problems.

The fact that Nottingham Forest have three other strikers in the first team this summer — Chris Wood, Arnaud Kalimuendo, and Igor Jesus — has not helped his case, as the club ultimately needed to part ways with at least one of them.

Now, Fabrizio Romano reports that Awoniyi is set to leave the City Ground for Coventry City in a permanent transfer.

Most details of the transfer are yet to be confirmed, but we will tell you what we know about the deal below.

As of now, the deal has not been officially confirmed. But with Fabrizio Romano reporting it, there is a 90% chance that it will happen, albeit that also depends on if Awoniyi passes his medical.

Given the fact that the Super Eagles striker is 29 years old, there is a good chance that he won’t sign a long-term contract. So it will likely be a three-year deal.

The fee is also unconfirmed at the moment. But it should be around the €8 million mark since that is his market value on Transfermarkt.

Awoniyi’s salary package is also not confirmed at the moment, but there is a chance that he will take a slight paycut.

Most of the details are not sure yet, but in the coming hours and days, everything should be clearer.
