Coventry City vs Fulham on Saturday, October 24, brings together two bottom-four sides, with 17th-placed Coventry on six points and 18th-placed Fulham on five after seven games each.

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi arrives in form after scoring the 34th-minute winner in Fulham’s 1-0 victory over Hull, the first league win of Alvaro Arbeloa’s reign.

On the other side, Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi returns to contention for Coventry after serving a three-match ban for his red card against Brighton.

Coventry City vs Fulham preview: form and context

Coventry lost their first four league games on their return to the top flight, then won at Nottingham Forest, beat Newcastle 4-1 at home and lost 3-1 at Tottenham on Monday.

Home form is the concern, as Coventry have conceded seven goals in three league games at their own stadium, including a 5-0 defeat by Brighton.

Fulham’s league record stands at one win, two draws and four defeats, and they have scored one goal in three league trips away from Craven Cottage.

Fulham had seven days to prepare compared to Coventry’s five, although they face Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, October 28.

Coventry City vs Fulham head-to-head: No top-flight meeting since 1968

The clubs have not met in the top flight since April 1968, when they drew 1-1, so there is no recent Premier League history to lean on.

This is the first of two Premier League meetings this season, so there is no reverse fixture to look back on, yet.

Their last two league games came in the 2021/22 Championship, and Coventry won both, 4-1 at home on October 2, 2021 and 3-1 at Fulham on April 10, 2022.

Viktor Gyokeres scored twice in the first of those wins, which Coventry completed after falling behind.

Those results are more than four years old, so they work as colour rather than a guide to Saturday.

Coventry City vs Fulham Team News

Coventry

Coventry remain without Aurèle Amenda, Haji Wright, Josh Eccles and Luke Woolfenden through injury.

Awoniyi is back after his ban, and the Super Eagles striker came on for Sidiki Cherif after about an hour at Tottenham, although Cherif is still expected to lead the line.

Loum Tchaouna and Yann Gboho are fit, but both missed the Tottenham trip while they adapt to Lampard’s methods.

Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka is available but is not among the expected starters.

Fulham

Ryan Sessegnon is suspended after his stoppage-time red card against Hull, and the three-match ban also rules him out of the EFL Cup tie with Palace and the league trip to Aston Villa on October 31.

The loss is smaller than it sounds, because Sessegnon was a substitute against Hull and Antonee Robinson started at left-back.

Hugo Larsson, on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, is available again after a groin problem, and Alvaro Arbeloa said on Friday that everyone is available.

Joachim Andersen is fit but has been left out of the starting XI since the Liverpool game, so Calvin Bassey and David Affengruber are the expected centre-back pair.

Captain Bassey is expected to start alongside Iwobi.

The Managers: Frank Lampard v Alvaro Arbeloa

Lampard took over at Coventry in November 2024 and won the 2025/26 Championship with 95 points, 11 clear of second-placed Ipswich.

He signed a new contract to 2029 on June 30, after interest from other clubs, including Fulham.

Lampard previously managed Chelsea and Everton, which gives him a Premier League background that Arbeloa does not have as a manager in England.

Arbeloa, 43, was appointed in early July on a three-year deal after Marco Silva left for Benfica, and this is his first managerial job in English football.

He took charge of Real Madrid in January 2026 and won 18 of 28 matches before moving to London.

Coventry City vs Fulham tactics: pressing against possession

Both sides are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1, so the contest will be decided in the spaces between the lines rather than by a change of shape.

Fulham average 64% possession in the league against 43% for Coventry, and Lampard described them as a side that likes to build and play through.

Sander Berge and Shea Charles form the Fulham double pivot, with Oscar Bobb, King and Iwobi supporting Gonzalo Garcia.

Coventry’s front four pressed well in the win over Newcastle, and Rudoni’s role behind Cherif is to turn that pressing into quick chances, with Brandon Thomas-Asante’s two assists showing where the supply comes from.

Fulham’s weakness runs the other way, as they control games but concede late, having let in four goals after the 75th minute before the Hull game, a joint league high.
