‘Crazy’ Nwabali: How does Eric Chelle view erratic Super Eagles no.1?

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has moved quickly to stand by Stanley Nwabali, insisting the goalkeeper’s character and commitment remain invaluable to Nigeria ahead of next month’s World Cup playoffs.

The Chippa United shot-stopper came under intense scrutiny following his display against Lesotho in the Matchday 9 qualifier, a performance that drew heavy criticism from supporters and pundits, and has seen fans eager for the return of Maduka Okoye.

Nwabali was also involved in a heated confrontation with teammates during the defeat to Benin Republic, a moment that fuelled questions about his temperament. For many observers, it was further evidence that his emotions were spilling over at the wrong time. Chelle, however, sees those reactions through a completely different lens.

Chelle praises Nwabali’s intensity and commitment

The head coach maintains he is the one who sets the standard for his players and that mistakes, even emotional ones played are part of high-level football. In his words, “Nobody knows what I ask from my players. Sometimes they make mistakes, which is normal. Maybe I told Nwabali to be strong. I don’t want a nice guy in my team.”

Speaking on Eagle7 103.7FM’s Saturday morning show, '90 Minutes with Mathematical7′, Chelle shared a memory from his own playing days to explain his stance. “I played with a goalkeeper during my active days, a Serbian goalkeeper. This guy was crazy on the pitch, because he was crazy, we the defenders were also crazy too,” he said, pointing out how a fierce goalkeeper can lift an entire back line.

He further defended Nwabali’s work ethic: “Stanley gives everything on the pitch for the team, and the country. Sometimes he made some mistakes, but it is normal, but the reality is that he gives everything on the pitch.” While acknowledging that “Nwabali needs to be calm at times,”

Chelle stressed that the focus now shifts to preparing for Gabon. “We will bring in the best players, Stanley, maybe the other goalkeepers, the best players will be invited for the game.”
