Derby County vs. Birmingham City: Team news, H2H, predictions as Osayi eye more minutes

Published on by

Derby County welcome Birmingham City to Pride Park on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in a Championship fixture that could have serious implications for the play-off race, Afrik Foot reports.

The Rams sit eighth in the table on 57 points, just three adrift of the top six with eight matches remaining.

Birmingham occupy 10th on 53 points and cannot afford to let the gap to the play-off places grow any wider.

This match also carries a significant personal dimension: Derby head coach John Eustace was sacked by Birmingham in October 2023, a decision that preceded the club’s collapse into League One relegation that same season.

Eustace has spoken positively about his time at St Andrew’s, but the chance to damage his former employer’s promotion hopes will not have escaped him.

For Chris Davies, this is a must-win fixture if his side are to sustain any realistic shot at finishing in the top six.

Match Preview: Derby County vs. Birmingham City

The Rams were winless in their opening four Championship matches and sat perilously close to the relegation zone in October.

A five-match winning streak in November transformed their campaign and earned Eustace a nomination for Championship Manager of the Month.

Away form has been the foundation. Derby boast one of the best records on the road in the division this season, furthered by a stunning 5-0 win at Bristol City on January 30.

Home form has been less convincing, with seven wins, three draws and five defeats from 15 matches at Pride Park.

Three wins from their last five matches have steadied the ship after a wobble in late February, with Patrick Agyemang and Sammie Szmodics leading the line with increasing chemistry.

The 1-0 win at Portsmouth on March 16 was exactly the type of result Derby needed to stay in touch with the play-off pack.

Birmingham, meanwhile, have endured a turbulent few weeks.

A three-match losing run in late February and early March saw them fall from the edge of the top six into mid-table mediocrity.

Defeats at Millwall (3-0), at home to Middlesbrough (1-3) and at Charlton (1-0) represented a damaging sequence that exposed defensive frailties away from home.

The 1-0 win over QPR on March 11 halted the slide, and a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United last time out offered further encouragement.

But the numbers paint a concerning picture on the road: eight defeats in 13 away matches this season, with the Blues failing to score in their last two away outings.

Jay Stansfield leads the Blues’ scoring charts with nine Championship goals, while Marvin Ducksch has contributed eight.

The supply line has dried up recently, though: Birmingham have averaged just 0.6 goals per match over their last five league fixtures.

If they are to take anything from Pride Park, they will need to find the attacking fluency that characterised the early months of the campaign.

Head-to-Head Record

The reverse fixture on Boxing Day 2025 ended 1-1 at St Andrew’s.

Patrick Agyemang gave Derby an early lead, but Jack Robinson’s second-half equaliser ensured a share of the spoils.

Birmingham dominated possession with nearly 74% of the ball, yet Derby restricted them to just one goal despite 25 shots.

It was a result that depicted the Rams’ resilience on the road and Birmingham’s occasional inability to convert territorial dominance into victories.

The two clubs have a long history of competitive fixtures in the Championship.

Derby hold a slight edge in the overall head-to-head record, but recent meetings have been tight, with three of the last five ending in draws.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Derby County

Derby’s goalkeeping situation is the biggest story in this fixture.

First-choice Jacob Widell Zetterstrom remains sidelined with a persistent virus that has kept him out since mid-January, with Eustace admitting there is “just something not right” with the Swede’s recovery.

Back-up Josh Vickers suffered a groin injury against Millwall on March 10 and will miss six to eight weeks, likely ruling him out for the rest of the regular season.

That leaves 37-year-old third-choice Richard O’Donnell between the posts, and he delivered a solid display in the 1-0 win at Portsmouth.

Elsewhere, Max Johnston (hamstring) is a long-term absentee.

Callum Elder underwent surgery on a toe and knee problem and is expected back after the international break.

Sondre Langas and Lars-Jorgen Salvesen are both progressing from hamstring and calf injuries, respectively and could return after the March break.

Danny Batth was expected back in training last week, potentially giving Eustace an additional defensive option.

Liam Thompson (calf) remains a couple of weeks away.

Eustace is likely to name the same side that won at Portsmouth: O’Donnell in goal, a back four of Ward, Sanderson, Clarke and Murkin, Ozoh and Travis in the double pivot, with Brereton Diaz and Szmodics behind Agyemang.

Birmingham City

Birmingham have their own injury concerns, particularly at left-back. It remains to be seen if Nigeria international Bright Osayi-Samuel will form a makeshift backline.

Kai Wagner (shoulder) will miss the trip to Pride Park after being ruled out until April.

Alex Cochrane (ankle) remains a long-term absentee, leaving the Blues without a natural left-back.

Ethan Laird is expected to fill in on the left side despite being a natural right-back.

Lee Buchanan is also unavailable.

On a more positive note, Tommy Doyle has recovered from illness and trained ahead of the Sheffield United draw.

August Priske, the Danish striker who arrived in January from Djurgardens, is back in contention but is yet to open his account in nine appearances.

James Beadle kept a clean sheet against QPR and should retain his place in goal.

The centre-back pairing of Christoph Klarer and Jack Robinson looks settled, with Jhon Solis and Paik Seung-ho anchoring the midfield.

Joe Ward has been Derby’s standout performer this season.

The right-sided defender has contributed eight assists in the Championship, the most of any Rams player, and his FotMob rating of 7.23 is the highest in the squad.

Ward’s delivery from wide positions has been a consistent source of chances for Agyemang and Szmodics, and his energy on the overlap makes him a threat that Birmingham will need to contain.

Jay Stansfield leads Birmingham’s attack with nine goals and five assists, making him the Blues’ most important player in terms of direct goal contributions.

The 23-year-old forward was the club’s marquee signing last season and has carried that weight of expectation with impressive maturity.

His movement between the lines and willingness to run beyond the last defender makes him the focal point of everything Birmingham create going forward.

The Managers

John Eustace was sacked by Birmingham in October 2023 despite having the club in a competitive position.

The board cited a need for alignment between management and ownership, but the decision backfired spectacularly: Birmingham were relegated from the Championship under Wayne Rooney that same season.

Eustace rebuilt his reputation at Blackburn Rovers before leaving for Derby in February 2025, inheriting a team one place above the relegation zone.

He has since transformed the Rams into genuine play-off contenders, with the 5-0 demolition of Bristol City in January standing out as the signature performance of his tenure.

This will be a fixture he wants to win for reasons beyond just the three points.

Chris Davies arrived at Birmingham in the summer of 2024 after serving as assistant to Brendan Rodgers at multiple clubs and then as senior assistant to Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

His first season in management was remarkable: Birmingham won the League One title with a record-breaking 111 points, smashing the previous benchmark set by Reading in 2005-06.

The step up to the Championship has proven more demanding.

Davies’ possession-based philosophy has been effective at St Andrew’s, but the Blues have struggled to impose themselves on the road, and the inconsistency of the past month has tested his resolve.

Tactical Breakdown

Derby are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, though Eustace has also used a 3-4-2-1 at various points this season.

The double pivot of Ozoh and Travis gives the midfield a blend of energy and experience, while Szmodics operates as the creative link between midfield and the lone striker Agyemang.

Derby’s counter-attacking threat is their most potent weapon: the pace of Brereton Diaz and Brewster on either side stretches defences when the Rams win the ball back in transition.

Birmingham’s vulnerability when defending counter-attacks has been exposed repeatedly in recent away defeats, and that could be a decisive factor on Saturday.

Davies will set Birmingham up in a 4-2-3-1 with the ball, likely shifting to a more compact 4-4-2 shape out of possession.

Solis and Paik Seung-ho form a technically proficient double pivot that wants to dictate tempo and circulate possession.

The problem for the Blues is that their creative players have not been firing.

Demarai Gray has looked inconsistent in recent weeks, and Ducksch’s output has dropped.

Without Wagner at left-back, the width on that side will be limited, with Iwata or Laird filling in and offering less attacking impetus than the injured German.

The key tactical battleground will be the midfield.

If Birmingham can dominate possession as they did in the reverse fixture (74%), they will create opportunities.

But if Derby can disrupt that rhythm, force turnovers and release their quick forwards, the away side could find themselves on the wrong end of a fast-break that their makeshift defence cannot recover from.

Betting Tips for Derby County vs. Birmingham City

Main pick
Both teams to score 1.72
Alternative 1
Derby County to win 2.80
Alternative 2
Over 2.5 goals 1.90
Alternative 3
Patrick Agyemang to score anytime 2.80
Correct score
Derby County 2-1 Birmingham City 8.50

Both teams to score stands out as the main pick at odds of 1.72.

Derby have conceded in seven of their last 10 home matches, and their third-choice goalkeeper between the posts adds a layer of vulnerability.

Birmingham have scored in 13 consecutive Championship matches and possess enough quality through Stansfield and Ducksch to find the net even when away form is poor.

The Derby win at 2.80 represents solid value when you consider the Rams’ superior recent form, their three wins from the last five fixtures, and Birmingham’s wretched away record of eight defeats in 13 road trips.

Over 2.5 goals at 1.90 looks appealing given that both sides have been involved in high-scoring matches this season and Birmingham’s defensive record on the road has been leaky.

Agyemang to score anytime at 2.80 is a player-specific selection backed by his 10 Championship goals this term and the fact that he netted in the reverse fixture.

Score Prediction

Matchday 39 · Score Prediction
Derby County 2 1 Birmingham
Why Derby County to win?
  • Derby have won three of their last five matches and sit four points above Birmingham in the standings, with momentum on their side heading into the final stretch
  • Birmingham have lost eight of 13 away Championship matches this season and failed to score in their last two road trips before the Sheffield United draw
  • The Rams’ counter-attacking threat is tailor-made to exploit Birmingham’s struggles in defensive transitions away from home
  • Eustace will be highly motivated against the club that sacked him in 2023, and that personal edge should transmit to his players
  • The Blues are likely to score through Stansfield or Ducksch, but Derby’s home record of seven wins from 15 suggests they can close this out

Derby take the three points in a competitive fixture and move to within touching distance of the play-off places heading into the international break.

Birmingham’s season is not over, but the margin for error has all but disappeared.
