Ligue 1 club Saint-Étienne are reportedly eyeing a move for Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers, currently with Rangers.
The 30-year-old striker has recently fallen down the pecking order at the Scottish club due to the impressive form of Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane, who has netted five goals in six games, and the return of Brazilian striker Danilo from injury.
Dessers, signed by Rangers for £6 million from Cremonese, has faced criticism despite his respectable work rate and tally of 12 goals in 26 appearances this season, including six in the Scottish Premiership.
Frustrated by limited opportunities and being primarily used as a late substitute, he is reportedly keen on a move where he can secure regular playing time.
While his contract with Rangers runs until 2027, his market value of €4 million makes the transfer financially feasible.
Do Saint-Étienne need Dessers?
Saint-Étienne view Dessers as a key addition to their attacking line-up, considering his international pedigree and experience across various European leagues.
The Ligue 1 side desperately need attacking reinforcements as they languish in 16th place on the 18-team table, having scored a dismal 12 goals in 15 matches.
This dire statistic, as well as the threat of relegation, underscore their urgent need for additional firepower.
Saint-Étienne, who parted ways with former coach Olivier Dall’Oglio on Saturday, are currently the second-worst goal-scoring side in the league this season.
Dessers’ ability to hold up the ball and his awareness in the penalty box could open up Ligue 1 defences and help the team climb out of the relegation zone. They would also contrast well with the more technical approach of Georgian forward Zurko Davitashvili, who is the club's leading scorer with five this term.
With his attributes, the Rangers man seems an ideal fit for caretaker coach Laurent Huard’s tactical setup.
