Emmanuel Fernandez: Real reason Arsenal target will stay at Rangers this summer

Emmanuel Fernandez continues to attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but fresh comments from Rangers sources suggest the Nigerian defender is not heading for the exit door just yet, Afrik Foot reports.

The Super Eagles centre-back has enjoyed a meteoric rise since joining Rangers from Peterborough United last summer.

In his debut campaign at Ibrox, Fernandez established himself as one of the Scottish Premiership’s best defenders, winning the club’s Player of the Year award while scoring six goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.

Those performances have placed him on the radar of Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Rangers legend Kevin Thomson has now hinted that the club’s plan is not to sell Fernandez this summer, but to help him develop into an even more valuable asset.

Rangers see a bigger payday in the future

Fernandez delivered another commanding display in Rangers’ 2-1 pre-season victory over Saint-Etienne, earning Kevin Thomson’s Man of the Match award despite Cammy Devlin receiving the official honour.

The former Rangers midfielder was particularly impressed by the Nigerian’s composure in possession.

“My Man of the Match today will be Fernandez,” the 41-year-old told Rangers TV in quotes revealed by Rangers News.

“He looked very good with some of the passes he made.”

But it was Thomson’s final remark that revealed Rangers’ likely stance on the defender’s future.

“I hope one day in the future he can make the club a lot of money.”

Rather than discussing an imminent transfer, Thomson deliberately referenced the future, suggesting Rangers believe Fernandez’s market value can still increase after a brilliant debut campaign at Ibrox

One of the strongest arguments for Rangers keeping Fernandez is that the defender still has a lot of room for improvement.

Unlike many centre-backs linked with elite clubs, the Nigerian has completed only one full season at a club competing regularly for trophies and European football.

Earlier this summer, Fernandez himself admitted that new manager Derek McInnes has already identified several areas of his game that require improvement, particularly his defensive positioning and overall awareness.

That relationship appears central to Rangers’ long-term plans. Rather than rushing into a transfer while his reputation is still growing, another season under McInnes could transform Fernandez from one of Scotland’s best defenders into one of Europe’s most complete centre-backs.

Arsenal may benefit by waiting

Arsenal’s interest is clear. Mikel Arteta values defenders capable of playing out from the back, dominating aerial duels and contributing from attacking set-pieces, all of which are attributes Fernandez can execute to a very good extent.

However, timing remains important. A move to North London this summer would likely place Fernandez behind William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães in the pecking order, reducing his opportunities for regular first-team football.

At Rangers, the situation is entirely different. He is already one of the team’s undisputed leaders, a guaranteed starter and arguably the cornerstone of McInnes’ rebuild.

For a player hoping to cement his place in Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad ahead of AFCON 2027, consistent minutes may be more important than sitting on the bench at an elite Premier League club.

The transfer rumours surrounding Emmanuel Fernandez are unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

His performances have made him one of the most sought-after Nigerian defenders in Europe, yet Rangers have no desire to cash in immediately.

Thomson’s comments suggest the club’s objective is to continue developing Fernandez before eventually negotiating a much bigger transfer fee in the future.

For the defender, another season at Ibrox also offers clear benefits: guaranteed football, European competition, continued development under a manager who believes in him, and the chance to arrive at AFCON 2027 as an even more complete centre-back.
