Emmanuel Fernandez: Two reasons Nigerian defender could be forced into Rangers stay

Published on by , updated on

Emmanuel Fernandez has returned to full training with Rangers after managing a minor knee complaint, with new manager Derek McInnes confirming the Super Eagles centre-back is fit and ready as the new season beckons, Afrik Foot reports.

The 24-year-old enjoyed one of the most remarkable debut seasons in recent Scottish football history, making 33 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals, winning the Rangers Player of the Year award and earning the club’s sole place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Season.

Those displays triggered a summer-long transfer saga that has linked him with Arsenal, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Rennes, Feyenoord and most recently Galatasaray, with Rangers holding firm on a valuation of just over £20 million throughout.

Rangers have also moved to sign Ben Godfrey from Atalanta on a season-long loan with a significant buy option, a move widely interpreted as preparation for Fernandez’s departure. Yet as pre-season progresses, two factors are pointing toward a scenario where Fernandez remains at Ibrox for another season.

What McInnes said about Emmanuel Fernandez’s return

Speaking to Rangers TV, McInnes was visibly pleased to have his most important defensive asset back in the fold, while also emphasising the care being taken with his squad’s physical condition during the early stages of pre-season.

“Equally at the same time, we don’t want to pick up any injuries and have players missing a few sessions,” the Rangers boss said.

“So we’re getting Big Manny back today, doing his first work with the team. He’s been doing a bit of work with a wee knee complaint, but he’s fine and good to go now.

“We’re now just looking at what the players are going to give us, but their effort has been there.”

The nickname ‘Big Manny’ hints that the new coach has already built a personal relationship with his player, and values him highly and regards him as a central figure in what he is building at Ibrox.

McInnes did not say Fernandez was one of several options he was assessing. He announced his return as a notable and welcome development.

Two reasons Fernandez could be forced into a Rangers stay

The first reason is the defensive depth problem that no single signing has yet resolved. Despite Godfrey’s arrival, Rangers enter pre-season with a centre-back unit that remains critically thin in terms of proven quality.

John Souttar’s injury record makes him an unreliable option for consistent availability across a long season, and Godfrey, however promising his potential, is arriving as a player rebuilding his career after two loan spells at Sheffield United and Brondby following a difficult run at Atalanta.

The gap in quality and reliability between the defensive unit with Fernandez and the unit without him is enormous, and McInnes will be acutely aware of that reality as he plans for a campaign that demands European qualification and a title challenge.

Selling Fernandez without a direct, proven replacement already confirmed would leave Rangers exposed in the one area where they cannot afford vulnerability.

No club has yet submitted a bid that Rangers have accepted, and until one does, and until a like-for-like alternative is secured, McInnes has every reason to simply integrate Fernandez into pre-season and build the team around him.

The second reason is his development. At Rangers, he is not just a starting centre-back. He is the most important defensive player at the club, already referred to by his manager with the kind of familiarity that signals leadership status.

Reports of a potential captaincy consideration under McInnes add another dimension.

The clubs circling Fernandez are prestigious, but none can offer him the same stability that Rangers do.

At Arsenal, he would be third-choice centre-back behind William Saliba and Gabriel. At Dortmund, competition for defensive places is fierce, and a period of rotation is almost inevitable for any new arrival.

Even at Rennes, where first-team minutes are more accessible, the profile and responsibility would be considerably lower than what Ibrox already offers.

A guaranteed starting role, a developing relationship with a manager who clearly rates him highly, and the prospect of leading Rangers’ defensive unit through a European campaign are things any defender at his age would want.
