Emmanuel Godwin: Meet ‘Dembele’ who could secure Nigeria’s fullback positions for 10 years

The influx of Nigerian players leaving for the greener pastures of Europe continues to surge year after year. These young talents move not only for financial security and a better quality of life but also to showcase their talents on the world’s biggest stages.

One standout player in this growing wave is Emmanuel Godwin. The 20-year-old left the Triple 44 academy for Swedish side Trelleborg in 2023, where he grew significantly. And by January of this year, his impressive performances earned him a bigger move to FK Pardubice in the Czech First League.

Emmanuel Godwin is a dynamic and versatile Nigerian footballer currently competing in the Czech top flight.

Known for his explosive speed, technical proficiency, and adaptability, he earned the nickname “Dembele” from his friends in Nigeria — a nod to his similar playing style.

Godwin’s rise has been quick, moving from the lower tiers of Swedish football to the top division in the Czech Republic in a short time. His talent has not gone unnoticed elsewhere; in a recent interview, the youngster admitted to receiving interest from Norwegian clubs.

A product of Triple 44 academy, Godwin’s preferred position is left-back, though he is equally comfortable operating as a right-back or a right-sided midfielder. His ability to maintain a high level of performance across multiple roles is a rare and valuable asset in today’s game.

To show his quality, Godwin made his debut for Trelleborg just one day after signing. This is an anomaly, as most coaches prefer to give new arrivals time to acclimate, but his talent was simply too undeniable to leave on the bench.

This trend has continued at Pardubice, where he has featured in every available match since his arrival, making nine appearances and one assist.

The Stats: More Than Just Pace

Godwin is a high-volume player who constantly demands the ball, shown by his average of 39.4 touches per game. He is an active presence at both ends of the pitch, having already created five big chances in his nine appearances.

Defensively, he remains sharp, averaging 0.9 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, and 1.7 clearances per match.

His disciplinary record shows two red cards, but it is worth noting that a recent red card he received in the league was subsequently overturned. So he is a disciplined player, rather than rash defender.

A Future Super Eagle? What He Offers Eric Chelle

Although Godwin is yet to reach his best, he has a high ceiling. His physical attributes allow for natural width and a potent outlet in the final third. But he balances this with impressive defensive energy.

This season, he has been dribbled past only once and has committed just a single error leading to a shot.

Given his trajectory, Godwin is a very good candidate for a trial within the Super Eagles setup. Recall that head coach Eric Chelle recently revealed that he would be testing fringe players during the upcoming Unity Cup in June.

This tournament has a history of unearthing gems; the last edition brought Benjamin Fredrick into the limelight, who has since become a reliable defender for the national team.

Also, Chelle should be actively looking to bolster his fullback options. With Ola Aina entering the twilight of his career and both Bright Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi turning 29 this year, the pool is aging.

Aside from Bruno Onyemaechi, who recently turned 26, there is a lack of youth who are consistent in the wide defensive areas.

Bringing in a player like Godwin now could provide the Super Eagles with ten years of consistency at least, given the fact that he is just 20.

Even if a call-up doesn’t materialize for the Unity Cup, Godwin is undoubtedly a talent the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) must keep on their radar.
