Chelsea’s new striker Emmanuel Emegha has reported to the club’s Cobham training centre for the start of pre-season ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, Afrik-Foot reports.
Emegha completes a move that has been in the works for months between the Blues and sister club RC Strasbourg.
The 23-year-old joined Strasbourg in 2023 before his planned switch to Stamford Bridge was set in motion last year as part of Chelsea’s long-term BlueCo project. After spending another season in France to continue his development and help Strasbourg push for European competition, he has now officially become a Chelsea player on a contract that runs until June 2033.

Standing at 6ft 5in (1.96m), Emegha has good strength in the air, pace in open spaces and ability to stretch opposition defences. Those qualities made him a highly-rated young forward in Ligue 1 before injuries interrupted his progress.
However, his future at Chelsea is already uncertain. Reports suggest the club is considering selling him before he makes a competitive appearance. Hamstring and thigh injuries restricted him to just 10 Ligue 1 matches and four goals during his final season at Strasbourg.
Chelsea, who have been linked with a move for Victor Osimhen, also face a crowded attack. João Pedro is expected to lead the line, Nicolas Jackson has returned after his loan spell at Bayern Munich, while Liam Delap is also competing for a place. With manager Xabi Alonso preparing for a season without European football, there will be fewer matches available for squad rotation, forcing Chelsea to make difficult decisions before the transfer window closes.

Why Nigeria can no longer call up Chelsea’s Emegha for the Super Eagles
Despite his Nigerian roots, Emegha is no longer eligible to represent the Super Eagles because he is now permanently tied to the Netherlands under FIFA regulations.
Born in The Hague to a Nigerian mother and a Togolese father, Emegha was originally eligible to play for the Netherlands, Nigeria or Togo. His impressive performances at Strasbourg attracted interest from the Nigeria Football Federation, which monitored his progress and explored the possibility of bringing him into the Super Eagles squad.
Head coach Eric Chelle was among those keen to strengthen Nigeria’s attack by convincing Emegha to switch allegiance. But the striker made it clear that his international future belonged to the Dutch national team.
That decision became final on November 14, 2025, when he made his senior competitive debut for the Netherlands in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Poland in Warsaw. Emegha came off the bench in the 87th minute to replace Memphis Depay before earning his second international appearance three days later against Lithuania.

Because his first senior appearance came in an official World Cup qualifying match after he had turned 22, FIFA’s eligibility rules permanently tied him to the Netherlands. The regulations allow nationality switches only in limited circumstances, and Emegha does not meet those conditions.
The striker has also publicly explained his choice. Speaking to Dutch media outlets including Sportnieuws and Ziggo Sport, he confirmed that Nigeria had approached him but insisted his heart was always set on representing the Netherlands.
“The Netherlands is simply my country,” Emegha said, adding that although Nigeria contacted him, his ambition had always been to wear the famous orange shirt.
Therefore, the debate is over for Nigeria. Chelsea’s promising young forward, Emegha, is no longer an option for the Super Eagles.
