Eric Chelle pushes for Super Eagles pay rise as Marseille job slips away

Published on by

Nigeria’s national team coach Eric Chelle has asked for better pay as talks continue over his future with the Nigeria national football team, Afrik-Foot reports.

Sources close to the Nigeria Football Federation say Chelle is pushing for a major salary increase to remain in charge of the Super Eagles. The Franco-Malian coach is believed to be asking for around $100,000 each month, a big rise from what he currently earns.

The request comes after Nigeria’s strong showing at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025, where the Super Eagles finished third. Many fans were impressed by the team’s fast and attacking football, with several praising the Malian tactician for giving the side fresh energy.

While some supporters feel he deserves improved pay for the progress made, others believe the federation must be careful with spending, especially with long-term football plans in mind.

Officials at the NFF have not yet confirmed if they are willing to meet the coach’s demands. However, talks are expected to continue in the coming weeks.

Chelle to Marseille links fade

Rumours recently connected Chelle with a move to Olympique de Marseille, but the federation has played down suggestions that the French club made a serious offer.

The former Mali defender himself has also cooled the speculation, saying he believes the job is more likely to go to Habib Beye, the former defender who once played for Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Super Eagles: Solving Eric Chelle's 'headache' as Nigeria step into AFCON 2025 crunch

Despite the Marseille talk fading, insiders say other African national teams are keeping a close eye on Chelle following Nigeria’s impressive AFCON run.

The coach signed a two-year deal in 2025 and still has about one year left on his contract. If the NFF cannot reach an agreement on new terms, Chelle may begin to look elsewhere for his next challenge.

For now, both sides remain quiet in public, but the coming months could be crucial in deciding whether Chelle continues building his project with the Super Eagles or moves on to a new opportunity.
