How Felix Agu’s Bremen return solves Eric Chelle’s big Super Eagles problem

Super Eagles defender Felix Agu took another important step in his recovery after making his long-awaited return in Werder Bremen’s 2-0 pre-season victory over VfL Bochum at the Parkstadion in Zell am Ziller, Austria, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 26-year-old was included in Daniel Thioune’s starting line-up and played the opening 45 minutes before being replaced as Bremen carefully managed his workload. It was Agu’s first match since recovering from muscular problems that interrupted the start of his preparations for the new Bundesliga season.

Agu had spent several days training on his own before being cleared to return to full team action. The left-sided defender immediately showed his usual energy, battling aggressively down the flank throughout the first half.

The friendly was far from a gentle return. Moments after the restart, Agu became involved in a heated clash with Alessandro Crimaldi and former Bremen player Manuel Mbom. All three players were shown yellow cards before the Nigerian was substituted a few minutes later without any injury concerns.

Still, the biggest victory for Agu was simply completing his comeback pain-free after a difficult year that included surgery for a syndesmosis ligament injury in late 2025 and several muscular setbacks that also forced him to miss Super Eagles duty.

What Agu’s return changes for Eric Chelle

Agu’s return could not have come at a better time for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle. A big defensive concern for Nigeria in recent months has been the lack of a reliable natural left-back. Zaidu Sanusi struggled with injuries and inconsistent form, leaving Chelle to put his trust in Bruno Onyemaechi. The Olympiakos defender rose to the occasion, helping the Super Eagles stay defensively solid as Nigeria won bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Now Agu’s recovery gives Chelle a genuine specialist on the left to offer competition to Onyemaechi. Although naturally right-footed, the Werder Bremen defender has built his career playing as a left-back, where his pace, defensive awareness and ability to carry the ball forward have made him a trusted steward. With Agu’s return, Chelle can finally build a settled back four and reliable options on he bench ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures.

After missing international football through injury, Agu now has the chance to re-establish himself as one of the first names in Chelle’s defensive plans. With Agu covering the left flank, competition on the right becomes much clearer.

Ola Aina is expected to remain the undisputed first-choice right-back thanks to his Premier League experience, consistency and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch. Behind him, Bright Osayi-Samuel becomes the immediate alternative. His speed and attacking style give Chelle another high-quality option whenever Nigeria need fresh legs or a more adventurous approach.

One of the biggest winners could be 21-year-old Abdullahi Bewene. After impressing on his international debut against Poland, the Baník Ostrava youngster offers versatility that extends beyond full-back, with the ability to operate in midfield or wider attacking positions. That flexibility makes him an important squad player rather than simply another reserve defender. The duo of Christian Akpan and Ryan Alebiosu are also highly rated by Chelle.

For the first time in months, Nigeria’s defensive picture looks far more balanced. Agu’s successful return may have lasted only 45 minutes, but it could prove to be one of the most important developments for the Super Eagles as Chelle prepares for a demanding international season.
