Super Eagles defender Felix Agu faces another spell on the sidelines after suffering a fresh calf injury in his first attempt to return to full fitness for Werder Bremen.
The 27-year-old was forced off before half-time during Werder’s friendly against FC Twente during the September International break, ending his hopes of returning to action after nearly two months out with muscular problems.
Werder confirmed another calf injury for the one-cap Super Eagles defender, leaving Agu without a confirmed return date. The setback comes at a difficult time for the versatile defender, whose current contract expires in June 2027.
His fitness problems have already affected his future at the Bundesliga club, with Werder withdrawing an initial contract extension offer and both parties agreeing to put negotiations on hold while he recovers.

When will Felix Agu return for Werder Bremen?
According to German outlet DeichStube, the defender’s return is not known at the moment.
A report published by RotoWire, citing Bild, revealed that Agu was undergoing further medical examinations because of his recurring muscular problems. A return after the November international break was raised as a possibility, but it is not a target for the club or the player at the moment.
Agu must recover sufficiently to resume full training before Werder can assess when he will be ready for competitive football.
Given his recent setbacks, the club will be keen to avoid rushing him back. His last competitive game came on April 12 where he played 79 minutes in a Bundesliga game against FC Köln.
The latest injury is frustrating for the full-back because the friendly against Twente was intended to help him regain match fitness after his lengthy absence.

How recurring injuries have affected Agu’s contract
Agu’s fitness problems have also complicated his future at Werder Bremen. The club presented the Nigerian with a contract extension offer, but the proposal has since been withdrawn. Negotiations are currently on hold as both parties prioritise his recovery.
Werder’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, told DeichStube: “We have agreed with Felix’s side that we will initially focus on his recovery.”
Niemeyer also indicated that there would be no immediate decision on the defender’s future.
The club still value the defender, but since he joined the club in 2020, the Germany-born defender has missed 69 games.
The withdrawn offer does not mean Werder have ruled out a new contract. Instead, the club and player will revisit the situation after his recovery, with no agreement currently in place.

What Agu’s absence means for Nigeria
Agu’s aim will be to recover fully, mentally and physically, and return to regular football. His ability to play on either side of the defence makes him a useful option for Werder, but he needs consistent minutes to re-establish himself.
The injury also complicates his prospects with the Super Eagles. After making his senior Nigeria debut in May 2025, Felix Agu hasn’t played for Eric Chelle’s side again, as his unavailability has seen him get just one more invite since then.
For now, Agu’s return remains uncertain. A comeback after the November international break has been suggested, but Werder Bremen have not confirmed that timeline.

His recovery will also be important in determining when contract discussions can resume.
If he doesn’t make it back in time to get minutes under his belt before the end of the season, the signs point towards Agu becoming a free agent by the end of the 2026/2027 campaign.
