Super Eagles and Millwall winger Femi Azeez has revealed how Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle inspired him on his first appearance for the three-time African Champions, Afrik Foot reports.
Very few footballers have the kind of debut the 24-year-old did. He became the first player in the 21st century to score a brace for Nigeria.
Azeez also provided an assist in Nigeria’s convincing 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the final, helping the Green and Whites successfully defend the Unity Cup crown.

How Chelle inspired Femi Azeez
For many players, a first appearance for their nation, despite it being what they dreamed of, can be nerve-wracking.
Instead, Azeez revealed Chelle made things remarkably simple. The Super Eagles coach told the winger to play his natural game and enjoy the experience rather than worry about expectations.
“I don’t think there was any expectation,” the Aston Villa-linked winger said in an interview with Austin Okon-Akpan.
“He called me and said, ‘Just do my thing, enjoy myself and see how it goes’. There was no expectation, no pressure.”

Rather than looking overwhelmed by the occasion, Azeez played with confidence, taking on defenders and taking shots despite playing in a relatively new role.
The result was two goals against Zimbabwe and a creative display against Jamaica that further strengthened his growing reputation.
Azeez also credited the atmosphere inside the Super Eagles camp for helping him settle quickly.
Under Chelle, Nigeria’s camp has developed a reputation for togetherness and openness, something several players have highlighted since the Franco-Malian tactician took charge.

Asked about the secret behind his impressive performances, Azeez pointed to the mood around the squad.
“Enjoyment. Good vibes here, good team, good management, freedom,” the winger explained.
“You know we’ve only been together for eight days, and we formed a good bond, a good family, and we are all happy as you can see with the celebrations.”
Born in London, the winger was eligible to play for England and Spain in addition to Nigeria. However, the Super Eagles remained his preferred international destination.
“It’s still an honour and it’s always going to be pride,” he said.
“For years. I couldn’t tell you how many years. It has been a long time [since I wanted to play for Nigeria].”

Although Millwall blocked his release for Nigeria’s upcoming friendlies against Poland and Portugal, Azeez made it clear he remains eager to answer any future calls from Eric Chelle.
“Of course. If he calls me up, that will be great, but let’s see what happens,” he concluded.
Femi Azeez finished the 2025/26 Championship season with 11 goals and seven assists, earning a place in the division’s Team of the Season.
