Fenerbahce news: Two reasons Birmingham could lose Bright Osayi-Samuel this summer

Published on by

Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel could be on the verge of an emotional return to Fenerbahce just one year after leaving the Turkish giants for Birmingham City, Afrik Foot reports.

The 28-year-old joined the Championship club on a free transfer last summer, penning a three-year deal in the hopes of helping Birmingham to top-flight football after four-and-a-half successful seasons in Istanbul. However, reports from Turkey suggest that his stay in England may be much shorter than expected.

As per Fotomaç, Fenerbahçe have revived their interest in the Nigerian international, with the defender surprisingly keen on a return to Turkey.

While Birmingham remain hopeful of retaining one of their most experienced players ahead of the new season, several factors suggest they could struggle to keep hold of the former QPR man.

Fenerbahce keen on re-signing Bright Osayi-Samuel

Osayi-Samuel established himself as one of the most reliable full-backs in Turkish football during his first spell at Fenerbahce.

After joining from Queens Park Rangers in January 2021, he made over 170 appearances for the Yellow Canaries, winning the Turkish Cup and regularly featuring in the UEFA Europa League.

Transferfeed first reported that Fenerbahce were considering bringing the Nigerian back as they evaluate alternatives in case Portuguese full-back Nelson Semedo leaves the club this summer.

Recent reports from Fotomaç have gone a step further, claiming that Osayi-Samuel has already held discussions with returning manager Ismail Kartal regarding a possible reunion.

The defender remains hugely popular among supporters, while former teammate Alexander Djiku recently admitted that Osayi-Samuel was among the players he missed most after leaving the club, underlining the strong relationships the Nigerian built in Istanbul.

Two reasons Birmingham could lose Bright Osayi-Samuel this summer

1. Fenerbahce offer European football

Perhaps the biggest factor working against Birmingham is the level of football on offer.

While Birmingham gave Osayi-Samuel regular minutes last season, Championship football still lacks the prestige and intensity of competing for titles and European places in Turkey.

At Fenerbahce, the Nigerian was regularly involved in UEFA competitions and title races, facing elite opposition almost every week.

With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approaching and competition for places in the Super Eagles squad increasing, a return to a higher-profile environment could significantly strengthen his standing in Eric Chelle’s squad.

Remaining in England’s second tier may not provide the same platform.

2. His emotional attachment to Fenerbahce remains strong

Football decisions are not always purely tactical or financial. Osayi-Samuel built a deep connection with Fenerbahce during his first spell, becoming one of the fan favourites at the club.

His close friendships within the dressing room, combined with the affection shown by supporters, could play a major role in any final decision.

Recent Turkish reports even suggest the defender is eager to return to Istanbul, indicating that the emotional pull of the club remains strong despite his move back to England.

With Ethan Laird also expected to play a bigger role for Birmingham next season, Osayi-Samuel may feel that the timing is right to return to an environment where he is already trusted, loved and fully appreciated.

For Birmingham, keeping hold of the Nigerian could therefore prove increasingly difficult if Fenerbahce decide to formalise their interest in the coming weeks.
