Former Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City midfielder Gareth Ainsworth has backed Frank Onyeka’s Coventry City to gain promotion to the EFL Championship, Afrik Foot reports.
Onyeka joined the Sky Blue Stars from Brentford on a loan deal back in January, with a clause included to join Lampard’s side permanently at the end of the season if they can lift the EFL Championship.
Since the 28-year-old moved to the CBS Arena, Coventry City are yet to drop points in six games, racking up 18 on the bounce, alongside a man of the match award against West Bromwich Albion.

Ainsworth backs Onyeka’s Coventry for PL spot
Frank Lampard’s men are currently eight points clear at the top of the EFL Championship table, and Ainsworth, who coached QPR and Wycombe, believes the title race is already a foregone conclusion.
“Frank will have a go at me for saying this, but I think they’re the best team in the Championship – and that proves it,” the 52-year-old said on Sky Sports in quotes revealed by the Coventry Telegraph.

“The squad is just phenomenal, the pace, the control of the ball, the chances they’ve created, you see why they’re top of the league.
“You’re talking about a man who has experienced pressure at the highest level, in fact, and I think that he will not be setting targets saying ‘Let’s reach that’.
“He’ll just be going game by game, game by game, and that’s the way to do it, for me. That’s the way I would do it.
“I think that you can’t get carried away and start setting targets you just fall away. [It’s] game by game and the process will look after itself. They’ve done fantastically well this season. Fair play to Frank.
“The spirit there is obvious to see, everyone’s smiling, the fans are involved, it looks like they’re unstoppable at the moment, and with performances like tonight they’re going to be,” the Gillingham boss concluded.

There are nine games left until the end of the EFL Championship season, and 27 points left to fight for as Coventry City looks to lift their second Championship trophy.
