Frank Onyeka: What next for Super Eagles star after Championship title win with Coventry?

Published on by

Frank Onyeka has added his name to the growing list of Nigerian players who have lifted the English Championship title, following Coventry City’s impressive triumph, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles midfielder was part of the side that sealed the title in style with a 5-1 win over Portsmouth on Tuesday night.

Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, had already secured promotion to the Premier League a few days earlier. But this victory confirmed them as champions of England’s second tier, capping off a remarkable season for the Sky Blues.

The match itself was one-sided. Haji Wright opened the scoring early with his 17th league goal of the campaign. Ephron Mason-Clark scored twice in the second half, while a Portsmouth own goal and a late strike from Kaine Kesler-Hayden completed the rout. Portsmouth’s Adrian Segecic scored a late consolation, but it did little to change the story of the night.

The result took Coventry to 89 points, leaving them clear at the top with two matches still to play. More importantly, it marked their long-awaited return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.

Frank Onyeka’s impact in Coventry’s title charge

Onyeka’s role in this success should not be overlooked. The Nigerian midfielder joined Coventry on loan from Brentford in February 2026, and his arrival helped steady the team during a crucial part of the season.

Often called ‘The Tank’ because of his strength and energy, Onyeka quickly became a key figure in midfield. He brought experience from the Premier League and added balance to a side that needed more control in tough matches.

In just 13 league appearances, Onyeka made a strong impression. He averaged over one tackle per game and consistently helped his team win the ball back. His presence allowed Coventry to stay organised, especially during their late push for the title.

He started most of the games during this period and played a key part in the 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers, which secured promotion. He also featured prominently in the title-clinching win over Portsmouth, once again showing his importance to the team.

What next for Frank Onyeka?

Now that the celebrations are over, attention turns to Onyeka’s future, and it looks very clear.

Because of a clause in his loan deal, Coventry are required to sign him permanently following their promotion. This means his time at Brentford will come to an end after five years with the club.

Coventry are expected to pay a fee of around £6 million to complete the transfer, and Onyeka is likely to sign a three-year contract ahead of the new season.

This move offers a fresh start for Onyeka. While he struggled for regular playing time at Brentford, he has now found a system and a manager who trust him. Lampard already sees him as a key part of his plans for the Premier League.

Looking ahead, Onyeka’s role will be even more important. Coventry will aim to avoid relegation, and they will need players with strength, discipline, and experience to compete at the top level. Onyeka fits that profile perfectly.

There had been interest from other clubs earlier in the year, but the agreement in his loan deal means he will stay with Coventry. For now, his focus will be on preparing for the challenges of the Premier League.

This is also good news for Nigeria. A regular Onyeka playing in the Premier League could be vital for the Super Eagles as they prepare for future tournaments.

After helping Coventry rise to the top, Onyeka now faces his next big test; proving he can shine on the biggest stage in English football once again.
