Gift Orban's brace for Lyon in their thrilling 4-3 comeback win over Strasbourg has caught the attention of Lyon coach Pierre Sage, who admits he understands why the Nigerian's frustration after scoring.
Orban's performance not only helped his team secure all three points but also sent a “clear” message to his coach.
There has been tension between Sage and Orban over the striker’s lack of game time, with the 22-year-old expressing his displeasure on several occasions.
As a result, there were rumours during the transfer window that Orban was on his way out of the club, with Sunderland reportedly making a bid for the talented forward.
The deal failed to happen, and Orban remained at Lyon.
Lyon coach Sage understands Gift Orban's feelings
Despite his limited playing opportunities, Orban made a strong case for himself to be a starter with his performance against Strasbourg.
Coming off the bench in the 63rd minute, he scored twice within nine minutes, netting in the 63rd and 72nd minutes to complete Lyon's dramatic comeback.
Orban had not featured in Lyon’s first two games of the season, and after scoring, he made a gesture to express his frustration over his lack of playing time.
After the match, Sage acknowledged Orban's impressive display and empathized with the player's feelings.
“I understood it. For me, when a player isn't happy, I am on my side. His response will shape the relationship we have, which can go from being conflicted to a loving relationship,” Sage said.
“The message he sent tonight is very clear. Maybe if he had gone into a depression, the team would have sunk.
On the contrary, he said he wouldn't let the team down, that he is holding his head high, and that he wants to show he deserves to play. I received the message loud and clear.”
