Gift Orban: Why Super Eagles invitee cannot afford to flop at Amed Sportif

Gift Orban’s loan move to Turkish Süper Lig side Amed Sportif may not attract the headlines of his sensational transfer to Lyon two years ago, but it could prove to be the most important move of his career, Afrik Foot reports.

The 24-year-old Nigerian has joined Amed on a season-long loan from Hoffenheim, with the agreement including a purchase option that could become an obligation under certain conditions.

On paper, the move offers another opportunity to revive a career that has steadily lost momentum since his explosive breakthrough at Belgian side Gent.

In reality, however, it may represent Orban’s final opportunity to prove he belongs among Europe’s elite.

Why Gift Orban cannot flop at Amed Sportif

1. His reputation has declined with every transfer since leaving Gent

Few African forwards have burst onto the European scene quite like Orban. After arriving at Gent in January 2023, he scored an astonishing 32 goals and registered two assists in just 52 appearances.

He became one of Europe’s most feared young finishers, attracting interest from several top clubs after breaking records in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The Nigerian holds the record for the fastest hat-trick in UEFA club competition history, scoring three goals in just 3 minutes and 25 seconds for KAA Gent against İstanbul Başakşehir in the UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16.

Lyon eventually won the race for his signature, hoping they had secured one of Europe’s next elite strikers. Instead, the transfer marked the beginning of an alarming decline.

Orban struggled to establish himself in Ligue 1 before moving to Hoffenheim in January 2025, scoring five goals in 21 outings.

Although he managed four Bundesliga goals in 13 appearances, he never became a regular starter in Germany either. Another loan followed, this time to Hellas Verona.

Seven goals and two assists in 28 Serie A matches represented an improvement individually, but it came during a campaign that ended with Verona’s relegation.

Now Hoffenheim have decided another loan offers the best solution. Rather than competing for European qualification with achtzehn99, Orban finds himself joining a newly-promoted Turkish club searching for stability in the Süper Lig.

Every transfer since Gent has taken him a step further away from Europe’s biggest stage. Should the same happen in Turkey, convincing another major European club to invest heavily in him would become more difficult.

2. Amed offers what Orban has lacked

One constant throughout Orban’s recent career has been instability. He has played at four different clubs across four leagues in less than three years.

Each move required fresh adaptation, different tactical systems, new teammates and increasing pressure to justify previous transfer fees.

That constant disruption has prevented him from recreating the confidence and rhythm that defined his spell in Belgium. Amed offers something entirely different.

Unlike Hoffenheim, where competition limited his opportunities, or Verona, where survival became the overwhelming objective, the Turkish club appear prepared to build their attack around him.

Hoffenheim sporting director Paul Pajduch admitted there had been considerable interest after Orban‘s encouraging spell in Italy.

Rather than selling immediately, however, the Bundesliga side chose a destination where he could continue developing while maintaining the possibility of a permanent transfer.

That decision reflects belief in the player’s talent, but also an acknowledgement that he needs regular football more than another high-profile move.

If Orban secures consistent starts, he can finally have the chance to establish the continuity that has been missing since leaving Gent. For a striker whose confidence has historically been linked to goals, that could prove decisive.

Talent has never been Orban’s problem. His finishing instincts, movement inside the penalty area and ability to score in bursts remain unquestioned after what he achieved at Gent.

The challenge has been reproducing that level consistently against stronger opposition and within demanding environments.

Amed Sportif therefore represents far more than another loan move. Success could reopen the doors to Europe’s top five leagues and restore the reputation he built in Belgium.

Failure, however, would raise questions about whether the remarkable goalscoring phenomenon witnessed at Gent was simply the peak of his career rather than the beginning of something greater.
