Guinea-Bissau managed only 31 percent possession but defended their lead to stun the home crowd and move top of the group with seven points, one ahead of Nigeria. Coach Baciro Candé said his side had specifically prepared to prevent Nigeria from scoring early before striking themselves.

Three days later, Nigeria had their answer.

The Super Eagles travelled to Bissau knowing another slip would deepen the damage from Abuja. Moses Simon settled the Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria contest from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Samuel Osayi was fouled by Fali Candé.

The victory lifted Nigeria back to the top of Group A on nine points, two clear of the Wild Dogs. Chukwueze had a chance to double the lead before half-time but failed to find Osimhen with the better-positioned option.

3. Guinea-Bissau 0-1 Nigeria, January 22, 2024

This was less explosive than the 2023 qualifiers but carried serious tournament weight.

At the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Nigeria needed victory to secure their passage to the AFCON 2023 knockout stage. Moses Simon’s cross was diverted into his own net by Opa Sanganté in the 36th minute.

Victor Osimhen had a goal ruled out for offside, while both sides saw further efforts disallowed. Nigeria eventually secured second place in Group A with seven points and advanced to the last 16.

4. Guinea-Bissau 0-2 Nigeria, January 19, 2022

The first AFCON meeting was the calmest of the four Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria contests.

Sadiq Umar broke the deadlock in the 56th minute after a counter-attack created by Kelechi Iheanacho. That came before captain William Troost-Ekong doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 74th minute following excellent work on the flanks by Moses Simon.

The Super Eagles completed the group stage with three wins from three and nine points, while Guinea-Bissau were eliminated.
