Nigeria arrive in Bissau looking to make it two wins from two in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after recovering from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on Friday.

George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored their first senior international goals to overturn Ehsan Kari’s opener and give Eric Chelle’s side all three points.

Guinea-Bissau also started their campaign with a victory, defeating Tanzania 2-0 away from home through goals from Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé. That means both sides head into Tuesday’s meeting with three points, with the Djurtus currently ahead on goal difference.

The match is particularly important because Tanzania are co-hosts of AFCON 2027 and have already secured their place at the tournament.

Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are therefore competing for the remaining qualifying spot in Group L.

Latest update: Super Eagles complete team walk

The Super Eagles have just concluded their team walk ahead of this afternoon’s crucial qualifier in Bissau.

The players are now preparing for the final stages of matchday, with Eric Chelle set to name his starting XI before kick-off.

Nigeria completed their preparations in Uyo before travelling to Bissau on Sunday, arriving later that evening.

The short turnaround means Chelle has had limited time to make final adjustments ahead of the encounter.

Nigeria team news

The Super Eagles remain without Victor Osimhen, who is unavailable for both September qualifiers because of a muscle injury.

Chelle does, however, have several attacking options available, with Ilenikhena, Moses Usor, Taiwo Awoniyi, Akor Adams and Tolu Arokodare among the forwards competing for minutes.

Ilenikhena scored on his competitive debut against Madagascar, while Usor came off the bench to score the winner just four minutes after entering the game. Their performances have added another layer to Chelle’s selection dilemma.

There is also competition for the goalkeeper’s position. Stanley Nwabali started against Madagascar, while Maduka Okoye is available after joining the squad late for the opening fixture.

Guinea-Bissau team news

The Djurtus enter the match with confidence after their 2-0 victory over Tanzania.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the first half before Mama Baldé doubled the advantage shortly after the interval.

Baldé is particularly familiar to Nigerian supporters, having scored the only goal when Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 1-0 in Abuja during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

The hosts will be hoping their attacking players can again cause problems for a Nigerian defence that conceded first against Madagascar.
