Hannover eye Victor Boniface — 2 reasons the move makes sense

German club Hannover have shown interest in Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface ahead of a possible move this summer, Afrik-Foot reports.

Boniface’s future has become uncertain following his return from a disappointing loan spell at Werder Bremen last season, with questions surrounding where he will play and how he will fit into Leverkusen’s plans for the campaign.

The Super Eagles forward endured a difficult spell at Werder Bremen, with injuries affecting his campaign. He missed several matches after undergoing surgery on a recurring knee injury earlier in the year.

Boniface has since returned to Leverkusen and will be hoping to revive his career and rediscover the form he showed during the early stages of his time at the club.

The 25-year-old was a key player when Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season. He also won the Rookie of the Season award after an impressive debut campaign in Germany.

However, reports from Transfermarkt have now revealed that Hannover are very keen on bringing Boniface to the 2. Bundesliga this season and there are some reasons why a move to the club could make sense for Boniface.

A chance for regular playing time

Boniface was initially an important player for Leverkusen after joining the club and played a starring role in their Bundesliga triumph.

However, a series of injuries affected his progress and saw him lose his place in the starting lineup. He was eventually loaned out last season after struggling for regular playing time, and the situation could remain difficult this season.

Boniface is expected to face strong competition for the centre-forward position, with Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane also competing for places. There have even been suggestions that he could be used more often as an impact substitute.

That could make a move to Hannover an attractive option. At Hannover, Boniface would have a better opportunity to play regularly and could have the freedom to rediscover his best form in a different environment.

Regular football could also help him rebuild his confidence, take some pressure off his shoulders and remind everyone of the qualities that made him such an important player at Leverkusen in the first place

A strong season could even put him back in contention to become an important player for Leverkusen in the future.

Another chance for Boniface to revive his Super Eagles career 

A move to Hannover could also give Boniface another opportunity to revive his Nigeria career. The forward has made 13 appearances for the Super Eagles, but his last appearance for the national team came in June 2025.

Since then, he has been out of the squad and missed several important games, including crucial World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, a successful spell at Hannover could change the situation. If Boniface can stay fit, play regularly and rediscover his goalscoring form, Eric Chelle would have a strong reason to consider bringing him back into the Super Eagles squad.

If he can return to his best, he could become an important player for Nigeria going forward.

A move currently looks unlikely, especially considering his salary and the financial obligations that could come with a deal. However, a loan move could still be possible if both clubs can reach an agreement.

For now, Boniface remains a Leverkusen player and is in contention to feature in their Bundesliga opener against SV Elversberg on Saturday.
