Huge relief for NPFL side as FIFA lift transfer ban

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) club, Katsina United, are free to sign players again as world football governing body FIFA has officially lifted the transfer ban imposed on them.

The ban, which was enforced last month, came as a result of the club's failure to meet financial obligations to Nigerien player Muhammadu Sulley Salamoun.

The situation stemmed from financial issues linked to the club's previous management. However, Katsina United promptly entered into discussions with the player to resolve the matter and informed FIFA of the situation.

This proactive approach led to an amicable resolution between the player and the NPFL club that, ultimately, satisfied FIFA's requirements.

Subsequently, FIFA sent a letter to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirming the removal of the transfer ban.

“We (FIFA) take note from the mentioned correspondence that the creditor Muhammadu Sulley Salamoun has received the amount due by the respondent Katsina United FC, in accordance with the decision by FIFA,” the letter read.

“As a consequence we inform you that the present proceedings against the respondent Katsina United are hereby closed  and its ban to register any new players have been lifted.”

With the lifting of the transfer ban, Katsina United, who have yet to sign any players for the upcoming season, are now free to enter the transfer market.

This opportunity comes at a crucial time as the club looks to strengthen their squad following the departure of key players such as Stephen Manyo and Michael Ibe at the end of last season.

Katsina United concluded the 2023/24 NPFL season in 7th place, amassing 55 points from 38 games.
