Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei described Nigeria as ‘a very good team’ after his side lost 2-1 to the Super Eagles in a friendly match in Antalya, Turkey, Afrik-Foot reports.
Despite being without a couple of key players including Calvin Bassey and Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles looked largely comfortable against a team heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria made a fast start and took control early in the game. Moses Simon scored in the sixth minute, giving the Super Eagles an early lead. The advantage was extended early in the second half when Akor Adams made it 2-0.
Iran pulled one goal back through Mehdi Taremi in the 67th minute, but Nigeria held on to secure the win.

Speaking after the match, Ghalenoei said the game was useful for his team and praised the strength and quality of the Nigerian players.
“I think this was a very useful preparation game, especially since we were able to implement Plan B in defense against a strong and physical team like Nigeria,” Ghalenoei said.
“Nigeria was a very good team, and all eleven players on this team play in major European leagues such as Spain, Italy, England, France, Greece and Turkey.”
He also explained that the match allowed him to test different players in his squad.
“The national team needs such games. We also tried to use more players. Fortunately, with the new rules and the possibility of making eight substitutions, we had a good opportunity to evaluate different players.”

How Nigeria controlled the game in Antalya
Nigeria were the better side for most of the match and showed clear organisation under head coach Eric Chelle.
The Super Eagles started with energy and purpose. Simon’s early goal came after a quick counter-attack, where he beat his defender and finished calmly into the bottom corner.
In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi helped Nigeria stay in control, breaking up play and keeping the team organised. Going forward, Iwobi, Lookman and Chukwueze caused problems for Iran with their pace and movement.

Nigeria doubled their lead in the 51st minute. Adams finished a well-worked move after a precise pass from Lookman, putting the team in a strong position.
There were also important moments for new players. Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu both made their senior debuts, with Chelle using the match to test his squad. Later substitutions, including Paul Onuachu, Chidera Ejuke, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, helped Nigeria maintain their energy levels.
Iran responded through Taremi to make the final minutes tense, but Nigeria stayed calm in defence and saw out the game without further problems.
The result gives Nigeria confidence ahead of their next match against Jordan, as they continue their preparations and build momentum under Chelle.
