Lesotho vs Nigeria: Osimhen assist carries Super Eagles to nervy, underwhelming victory

Published on by

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory in Friday's Lesotho vs Nigeria encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

William Troost-Ekong put the visitors ahead in the 55th minute from the penalty spot after a handball in the box, before substitute Akor Adams doubled the lead with a composed finish following a clever pass from Victor Osimhen, marking a memorable debut at senior level.

Lesotho pulled one back late in the game following an error from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, adding some tension to the final stages. Despite the hosts’ goal, Nigeria maintained their composure and saw out the win, claiming their third victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The match was dominated by the Super Eagles, who created several chances but struggled to convert many of their opportunities.

Super Eagles World Cup qualifying calculus simplified

Nigeria’s performance reinforced their strong record against Lesotho, having won three of their last four meetings over the past six years, with the other encounter ending in a draw. The Crocodiles have proven to be a tricky opponent in previous qualifiers, but the Super Eagles managed to assert themselves when it mattered most.

The slim victory moves Nigeria up to 14 points in CAF Qualifying Group C, though they remain in third place behind second-placed South Africa on 15 points and leaders Benin.

With only one automatic qualification spot available, the Super Eagles must now defeat the Cheetahs of Benin Republic emphatically, as Benin have a superior goal difference of +5 compared to Nigeria’s +3. South Africa still hold the advantage with the same goal difference but one more point, meaning Nigeria’s path to the 2026 World Cup remains tightly contested.

With one game remaining, Chelle’s side will look to capitalise on their attacking strengths and maintain focus, while hoping for favourable results elsewhere in the group to secure a return to the World Cup stage.
