Super Eagles: Benin banking on ‘lively’ attack for another Abidjan upset

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr believes his team has a solid chance against Nigeria, highlighting the Super Eagles’ defence as a potential weak link.

The former Nigerian national team coach is optimistic that Benin can exploit this vulnerability when the two teams face off in the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

The Super Eagles will be missing several key defenders, including Zaidu Sanusi, who played a crucial role in the last Africa Cup of Nations, and Tyrone Ebuehi, while Semi Ajayi, a regular in World Cup and AFCON qualifiers, is also unavailable.

These absences could impact Nigeria’s defensive stability, giving Benin an opportunity to mount a serious challenge.

Rohr believes Super Eagles defensive problems can favour his team

Speaking ahead of their encounter on Thursday, the 71-year-old Gernot Rohr hinted that Benin’s energetic strikers could pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s defence.

“We have the return of Lenny Piringuel, who is finding his rhythm with Rouen,” he said. “His speed is an asset, especially against a Nigerian team that may have small problems in defence. We’re hopeful.”

The Super Eagles currently top Group D of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers with 10 points, followed by Benin with six.

However, in their previous encounter during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June, Benin managed to upset Nigeria with a 2-1 victory in Abidjan.

This result dealt a significant blow to Nigeria's 2026 World Cup ambitions, adding extra intensity to this upcoming clash.

However, Nigeria responded to that loss with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin in Uyo in their initial September meeting.

Despite this setback, Rohr is once again counting on Nigeria’s defensive frailties to help his team earn another win against their formidable West African neighbours.
