Victor Osimhen makes his first competitive return to Lille tomorrow when Galatasaray travel to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy for matchday three of the UEFA Champions League league phase, six years after the Super Eagles forward left the French club for a club-record fee to Napoli.
The Nigeria international will not be the only former Lille man in the away party. Rafael Leao, who scored eight goals in 26 appearances for the Dogues between 2018 and 2019 before his move to AC Milan, would have made the same homecoming, but the Portugal winger has been ruled out through a groin injury.
Both sides arrive at this fixture without a point from their opening two matches, a rare situation this deep into the Champions League and one that raises the stakes for whoever blinks first.

LOSC Lille vs Galatasaray: A First-Ever Champions League Meeting
Lille and Galatasaray have never faced each other in any official competition, with no previous encounters between the two clubs.
The only shared history runs through individual players rather than club meetings. Osimhen and Leao both wore the Lille shirt before moving on to bigger clubs, giving Wednesday’s game a personal subplot.
As a result, every statistic in this preview stands on its own, with no past meeting to draw lessons from either way.

Form And Context: Two Winless European Campaigns Collide
Lille go into Wednesday on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Brest last Saturday. That point followed a 3-0 defeat away to Arsenal in the Champions League, which came after a 1-0 home win over Le Havre and a 2-1 defeat at OGC Nice before that.
Across their last five matches in all competitions, Davide Ancelotti’s side have won two, drawn one and lost two, scoring five goals and conceding six.
Lille’s bigger problem sits in Europe. The club have won only one of their last six Champions League matches and have lost four of their last eight in the competition, a run that includes this season’s defeats at home to Real Betis and away to Arsenal.
Galatasaray’s domestic form is a healthy one. Okan Buruk’s side have won three of their last five matches in all competitions, the most recent a 1-0 win away at Genclerbirligi settled by a late own goal by goalkeeper İrfan Eğribayat.
Europe tells a different story for the Turkish champions too. Galatasaray have won only two of their last 10 Champions League matches, and this season’s two defeats, 3-1 away to Sporting CP and 1-4 at home to Barcelona, have left them with a worse goal difference than Lille heading into matchday three.

Team News: LOSC vs Galatasaray
LOSC Lille
Ethan Mbappe is unavailable for Lille, serving the second game of a three-match Champions League suspension picked up for a straight red card against Real Betis on matchday one. The ban runs out in time for the trip to Bodo/Glimt next month.
Ayase Ueda, Lille’s joint-top scorer this season, is sidelined with a heel injury sustained in the loss to Arsenal, while Tiago Santos and Hamza Igamane remain long-term absentees with cruciate ligament injuries. Osame Sahraoui has recovered from his foot problem and returns to contention.
With Ueda and Igamane both out, Olivier Giroud is set to lead the Lille attack as the club’s most experienced available forward, having scored twice in Ligue 1 this season.

Galatasaray
Galatasaray will make a late call on Lucas Torreira, who was substituted in the 81st minute of the loss to Barcelona, with no official diagnosis issued since.
He remains the biggest selection doubt on either team sheet, and his absence would open a recall for Renato Nhaga, who replaced him in that match.
Rafael Leao is out with a groin injury, third-choice goalkeeper Gunay Guvenc remains sidelined with a knee problem, and Wilfried Singo is a doubt with a thigh issue after returning to training.

The Managers: Ancelotti’s Big Night, Buruk’s European Itch
Davide Ancelotti has been in charge at Lille since June 1, 2026, on a two-year deal, replacing Bruno Genesio. The son of Carlo Ancelotti, his only previous head coaching role was five months at Botafogo between July and December 2025, where he won 12 of 27 league matches and finished sixth.
Ancelotti is still searching for his first Champions League win as a head coach, having lost both of his matches in the competition so far, at home to Real Betis and away to Arsenal, in a tournament his father Carlo won five times as a manager.
He does at least take charge with Lille unbeaten in their last three home matches at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, a run stretched by Saturday’s draw with Brest.
Okan Buruk has held the Galatasaray job for four seasons and counting, and has delivered four consecutive Super Lig titles, but continental football remains unfinished business.
Galatasaray have won only two of their last 10 Champions League matches under the former Inter Milan midfielder.

Tactical Preview: Lille’s width against Galatasaray’s makeshift right
Davide Ancelotti is expected to line Lille up in a 4-3-3, with Dilane Bakwa and Hakon Arnar Haraldsson stretching play either side of Olivier Giroud, and a midfield three of Benjamin Andre, Nabil Bentaleb and Ngal Ayel Mukau screening the back four.
That width could cause problems for a Galatasaray defence set to deploy Roland Sallai at right-back, a role he covers rather than his natural position, with Eren Elmali occupying the left side opposite him.
Okan Buruk’s 4-2-3-1 relies on Mario Lemina and Gabriel Sara to protect the back line, freeing Yunus Akgun, Aleksey Batrakov and Leroy Sane to support Victor Osimhen, though that same double pivot has been bypassed by quick transitions in each of Galatasaray’s last two Champions League matches.
Giroud’s hold-up play is likely to be central to how Lille break out from defence, buying time for Bentaleb and Andre to find Bakwa and Haraldsson in the channels rather than forcing long, direct balls into a well-organised Galatasaray back four.
If Lille can get their wide players in behind Sallai and Elmali early, in the way Barcelona and Sporting CP both did in Istanbul, the hosts have a route to control the game through wide areas rather than through the middle.
