Maduka Okoye: 2 reasons Super Eagles goalkeeper could lose Udinese starting spot

Published on by

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is under pressure at Udinese after a difficult run of results.

The Nigerian was Udinese’s most important player against Lecce, making eight saves despite conceding three goals at the Bluenergy Stadium. FotMob rated him 7.0, the highest of any player in the home side, underlining how the scoreline did not tell the full story of his solid display.

However, the defeat extended Udinese’s difficult spell, as Runjaic’s side have suffered defeat in their last five Serie A games, recording one win from seven games this season.

Coach Kosta Runjaic addressed Okoye’s error against Torino before the Lecce match, making it clear that the goalkeeper’s decision contributed to the goal that condemned Udinese to another defeat.

Although Runjaic defended the Nigerian’s overall ability, two factors could put his position under scrutiny if Udinese’s poor results and defensive problems continue.

Why Maduka Okoye could lose Udinese spot

1. His costly error raised questions

Okoye’s low moment came during Udinese’s 2-1 defeat to Torino a week ago.

After Jürgen Ekkelenkamp had brought Udinese level, the goalkeeper misjudged a second-half attempt to deal with a long ball and collided with teammate Nicolò Bertola. The mistake left Sandro Kulenović with the opportunity to score into an unguarded net, restoring Torino’s lead in the 67th minute.

Runjaic did not avoid the issue when he spoke before Sunday’s fixture.

“A coach must use clear words with his players, and I did on this occasion too,” the Udinese manager said on the club’s official website.

“He is well aware that his decision led to us conceding a goal.”

The coach acknowledged that Okoye made a bad decision, but also gave the Germany-born Nigerian his flowers.

“If he gives it everything he’s got, Okoye is one of the five top goalkeepers in Serie A,” Runjaic added.

Those comments show the coach’s faith in the former Watford goalkeeper despite his error, but also created a standard he must live up to whenever he steps onto the pitch.

2. Udinese’s poor results could force Runjaic to consider changes

The club went into the Lecce game after consecutive league defeats against Lazio, Inter Milan, Cagliari and Torino. Their inability to stop opponents from scoring leaves Runjaic under pressure to improve the team’s defensive organisation.

Before the Lecce match, the manager admitted that Udinese could not expect to dominate possession throughout a match and would need to defend collectively when the opposition had the ball.

That warning proved relevant against Lecce. Kialonda Gaspar opened the scoring in the 11th minute, Konan N’Dri doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 33rd, and Jamil Siebert added a third in the closing stages.

Okoye made eight saves, but could not prevent Udinese from suffering another heavy defeat.

The result should not be placed entirely on the goalkeeper. Lecce were head and shoulders above what Udinese could match, as they mustered 11 shots on target.

Also, the fact that Okoye was rated as Udinese’s best-performing player by FotMob reinforces the point that he was not the main reason for the defeat.

However, a team struggling to stop goals may eventually prompt its manager to review personnel as well as tactics. If Runjaic decides that changes are necessary, the goalkeeper’s position cannot be immune from scrutiny.

That remains a possibility rather than an indication that Okoye is about to be dropped.

Can Maduka Okoye keep his place at Udinese?

The defeat to Lecce has increased the pressure on Udinese, but Okoye’s performance is a counterpoint to the criticism surrounding his recent form.

If Udinese had won the game, it would have been the perfect response to atone for the error against Torino. Instead, he showed up, but his teammates didn’t.

Runjaic’s backing is another important factor. The coach criticised the Torino decision but expressed confidence in Okoye’s potential, describing him as a goalkeeper capable of reaching an elite level in the Italian top-flight.

The Nigerian now has an opportunity to respond through his performance against Samuel Chukwueze’s AC Milan next Sunday, rather than allowing one costly mistake to define his campaign.

He could come under more pressure if individual errors become a pattern or if Udinese decide that a change is needed to address their defensive problems, but based on the available evidence, losing his starting place is a potential risk, not an established decision.
