Maduka Okoye has emerged as a target for Inter Milan ahead of the January transfer window, but the Super Eagles goalkeeper faces several obstacles if he is to secure a move to the Italian champions.
The 27-year-old has established himself at Udinese since joining from Watford in 2023, keeping 10 clean sheets in 30 Serie A games last season, earning the club’s Player of the Season award.
However, Inter’s interest comes amid questions about the consistency of their current goalkeeping options, particularly Josep Martínez, whose recent performances have been under scrutiny.
Although Okoye’s experience in Serie A makes him an appealing candidate, three factors could complicate a potential move to San Siro.

Why Inter Milan may not sign Maduka Okoye
1. Costly errors
Okoye’s performances at Udinese have generally been encouraging, but occasional mistakes could raise concerns for a club with Inter’s stature.
His error during Udinese’s 2-1 defeat is the most recent example. The Nigerian rushed off his line and collided with teammate Nicolò Bertola, allowing Sandro Kulenović to score into an unguarded net.
Udinese coach Kosta Runjaic acknowledged the mistake, saying Okoye knew his decision contributed to the goal. However, he also defended the goalkeeper’s overall ability, describing him as one of Serie A’s top goalkeepers when he gives everything he has.
The Torino incident should not erase Okoye’s previous achievements. He kept 10 clean sheets last season and was voted Udinese’s Player of the Season.

Still, Inter would be assessing whether he can deliver consistently in a high-pressure environment. At a club competing for domestic and European honours, the smallest errors carry weight.
2. Josep Martínez is still in his prime
Another obstacle is the presence of Josep Martínez, who turned 28 in May 2026.
The Spaniard joined Inter from Genoa in 2024 and has already gained experience in the club’s goalkeeping department, playing as an understudy to Yann Sommer before the Swiss legend departed for Club Brugge.
Still, Martínez boasts decent numbers. In 30 games for the 2010 UCL winners, the Spaniard has kept 13 clean sheets and is entering the prime years of a goalkeeper’s career.
Inter could decide to continue developing him rather than spend heavily on another option.

Okoye’s links to Inter emerged amid scrutiny of Martínez’s performances, especially after he conceded four against Club Brugge, meaning the Nigerian could still have an opportunity.
The question is whether Inter see Okoye as an upgrade, a competitor for the starting role or another option in their goalkeeping hierarchy.
3. Okoye still has questions to answer internationally
Okoye’s international record could also influence how Inter assess him. The former Fortuna Düsseldorf goalkeeper has yet to establish himself as Nigeria’s number one since the AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon.
Stanley Nwabali was instrumental in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final and starred during the team’s bronze-medal campaign at the 2025 edition in Morocco.
Arthur Okonkwo has also entered the competition for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping position, giving coach Eric Chelle several options to consider.

Okoye has had encouraging spells with Nigeria, but he has not yet built a sustained record of leading the national team through a major tournament.
Martínez, meanwhile, has only one senior cap for Spain, but the context is different. He competes for the same position in a country with established goalkeepers like as David Raya and Unai Simón. Limited appearances for Spain do not necessarily reflect a lack of ability; they reflect the strength of the competition.
Will Inter sign Maduka Okoye?
A move to Inter remains a possibility rather than a transfer already in the works. Okoye has demonstrated his quality in Serie A, but his occasional errors, Martínez’s potential for improvement and the Nigerian’s unsettled international status could all influence the Italian club’s decision.
For the Super Eagles goalkeeper, consistent performances at Udinese and a stronger foothold with Nigeria would help strengthen his case for a move to one of Italy’s biggest clubs.
