Maduka Okoye is poised to make his long-awaited return as the Super Eagles goalkeeper in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, the Udinese number one shotstopper expressed gratitude and excitement about the opportunity to finally get to don the national team jersey once again after a prolonged absence.

Okoye, who last appeared for the Super Eagles during their 2021 AFCON Round of 16 defeat to Tunisia, has patiently awaited his chance while serving as a backup to Stanley Nwabali.

With Nwabali granted compassionate leave following a family bereavement, Okoye now has a prime opportunity to reclaim the starting position.

Adding intrigue to the goalkeeper selection is the presence of Amas Obasogie, an uncapped talent eager to prove himself.

Despite the competition, Okoye’s optimism remains resolute, hinting at his readiness to take on the challenge.

“This is the moment I have been waiting for. I have been attending camp for a long time now, and finally, I have the chance to play again.

“I'm thankful, and I cannot wait to put on the jersey again and play in front of the Nigerian fans at home in Nigeria,” he said while speaking to Victor Modo.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have already secured top spot in Group D after a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic, rendering Monday’s match a formality.

However, Okoye emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and building momentum ahead of the tournament.

He described the AFCON as a crucial competition for both the team and the nation, stressing their collective ambition to bring the trophy home.

Reflecting on the Super Eagles’ near success in their last AFCON outing, where they finished as runners-up, Okoye expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to surpass that achievement.
