Maduka Okoye: Has Super Eagles goalkeeper done enough to step up from Udinese?

Published on by

Maduka Okoye has emerged as one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in Italian football this summer, with Juventus the latest club to register serious interest in the Super Eagles shot-stopper, Afrik Foot reports.

The 26-year-old’s 2025/2026 campaign at Udinese has put him on the radar of several top clubs. He kept 10 clean sheets and conceded 32 goals across a campaign that saw Udinese finish in tenth place in Italy’s top flight.

More tellingly, Okoye produced match-winning performances against some of Serie A’s strongest attacking units, including Juventus themselves, demonstrating a capacity for big-game composure that separates average goalkeepers from the best.

His performances extended beyond the club stage. Nigeria’s friendlies against Poland and Portugal in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup gave Okoye a platform to reclaim his place as Nigeria’s number one, and he took it with both hands.

What Okoye said about his future at Udinese

Despite the growing interest from other clubs, the Germany-born Nigerian goalkeeper has responded to the offers with a measured approach.

“I am really very happy at Udinese,” he told Transfermarkt.

“Also the peace and routine I found here. Of course, I still have goals in my career, but currently my head is completely at Udinese. I enjoy it without thinking too much about the future.”

He acknowledged the interest without being drawn into specifics, admitting it feels good to be considered by bigger clubs.

“It is a good push for me as a person to know that you are in demand and that one or the other club is on the list,” Okoye continued.

“However, I leave this to my advisors, where I am in outstanding hands with Gabriele Giuffrida and Co. That’s their part and I have absolute confidence in their work.

“In football things can change quickly, and if it happens, I know that the club is well positioned and I can still earn them a nice replacement.”

Juventus have turned their attention elsewhere after complications in their pursuit of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, and Okoye represents a realistic and financially attainable alternative.

Udinese are open to negotiations if an offer of around €12 million plus bonuses comes in for the 21-cap Super Eagles goalkeeper, and the club are already monitoring Bologna’s Federico Ravaglia as a potential replacement.

Has Okoye done enough to step up from Udinese?

Okoye’s season at Udinese was not straightforward. He served a six-match suspension linked to a betting investigation before being cleared of intent and returning to reclaim his position.

He managed to keep his performances on the pitch consistent despite navigating a public controversy, and that’s the kind of character test that elite clubs look for when assessing footballers who want to compete at the highest level.

A move to Juventus, despite how huge, would show the trust the record Serie A Champions have in Okoye, especially with how he performed at the Allianz Arena last season.

Additionally, he’s already proven in the Serie A, taking out the adaptation risk that accompanies most big transfers – a new country, a new league, a new language.

For the Super Eagles, the implications are equally significant. Okoye playing in goal for Juventus in the Champions League next season would be the most high-profile Nigerian goalkeeper since Vincent Enyeama’s peak years at Lille, and his consistent excellence between the sticks would make the goalkeeping debate under Eric Chelle all but settled heading into the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
