Maduka Okoye: Has Udinese return settled Super Eagles goalkeeping debate?

Published on by

Maduka Okoye’s return to action has given Eric Chelle another reason to reconsider his options in goal, but the Udinese goalkeeper may need more than one clean sheet to settle Nigeria’s running goalkeeping debate, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 26-year-old made his first appearance since recovering from injury on Saturday, helping Udinese beat Padova 1-0 in the Coppa Italia.

For Okoye, it was an important first step after a frustrating period that saw him stay on the sidelines in Udinese’s pre-season preparation. For Chelle, however, it was another piece of information in a decision that remains far from straightforward.

Udinese coach Kosta Runjaić was pleased with the Nigerian’s comeback but also sounded a note of caution.

“Okoye was playing his first game back from injury and kept a clean sheet. The overall record is good, but we don’t want to get too excited; we need to stay focused ahead of the Como match,” the German coach said in quotes revealed by Udinese’s official website.

Why Maduka Okoye’s return matters to Chelle

The biggest advantage Okoye has is that he is returning to a competitive environment where he has already demonstrated his quality.

The former Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign with Udinese, making 30 Serie A appearances and keeping 10 clean sheets as the club finished 10th.

Okoye’s ability with the ball at his feet could also give him an edge over Stanley Nwabali, but his return has not automatically made him Nigeria’s No.1.

Nwabali still has a strong case

Stanley Nwabali remains very much part of the conversation. His performances for Nigeria, particularly at the Africa Cup of Nations, have earned him significant credit, and his physical presence remains one of his biggest strengths.

However, his latest club performance has provided Okoye with an opportunity. Nwabali conceded three goals as Chippa United lost 3-0 at home to Orlando Pirates, with his mistake for Gamphani Lungu’s opener particularly telling.

He made five saves, but the error helped change the momentum of the game.

However, a bad performance should not define Nwabali, just as one clean sheet should not define Okoye, and that is why the debate remains open.

Okoye has to make the decision easier

The good news for Chelle is that he does not have to make the decision immediately.

Okoye now has the opportunity to build momentum at Udinese, regain his rhythm and show that the form that made him one of the club’s most important players last season was not temporary.

If he can remain fit and consistently perform in Serie A, the argument for his return to the Super Eagles starting XI becomes considerably stronger.

Nwabali, meanwhile, has the same challenge: to respond with performances.

So, no, Okoye’s return has not settled Nigeria’s goalkeeping debate, but it has changed the perspective.

The issue is no longer whether Okoye can compete when given the chance, but whether he can be consistent in goal, like Nwabali has been over the past two years.
