Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi found himself at the centre of controversy during Leicester City’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, thanks to a reckless tackle that nearly cost his team dearly.
The incident occurred midway through the first half when Ndidi’s challenge on Cole Palmer led to a yellow card from referee Andy Madley, much to the dismay of Chelsea’s players.
Rob Page, former Wales manager, was quick to point out that Ndidi was lucky not to have been sent off for his actions.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Page criticised the tackle, which he described as dangerously reckless.
Ndidi's reckless tackle & missed chance: A frustrating night for the midfielder
“Wilfred Ndidi is very lucky. It's a clumsy challenge; he has gone in for the tackle and landed on Cole Palmer's Achilles tendon,” Rob Page said.
Page wasn't alone on this, as many believed it could have been a red card offence, especially given the nature of the challenge.
On TNT Sports, ex-Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole stated the same thing, emphasising that Ndidi’s frustration was evident in the reckless tackle, which contributed to Leicester’s already tense performance.
“That tackle, he could hurt him there. If VAR is ever going to step in for reckless dendagrement of a player. It’s a terrible tackle.
“This is a game Leicester were miles off it and at the height of their frustration. He’s lost his rag; he should be sent off. He nearly scores the equaliser. If he plays a part in getting Leicester back in the game, I'd imagine Enzo Maresca will be furious,” Joe Cole said.
Despite the controversy, Ndidi had an opportunity to redeem himself just minutes before halftime, when he found himself in a prime position to score.
However, his attempt went wide, adding to the frustration of Leicester’s poor outing.
As the match continued, Ndidi’s performance saw mixed results, completing 75% of his passes and winning two ground duels before his 71st-minute substitution.
