Ahead of the crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier against Nigeria, Benin manager Gernot Rohr has cautioned against underestimating the Super Eagles.
The match, set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 7, is expected to be highly competitive.
The German trainer noted that Nigeria have been reinforced since their last encounter, in which Benin upset the three-time African champions, with the return of key players such as William Toost-Ekong, Victor Osimhen, and Ola Aina, all of whom last featured for the Super Eagles at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Are Benin favourites against Nigeria after shock win in June?
In an interview posted by the Benin FA’s official X page, Gernot Rohr shared his insights on the upcoming match.
“We beat Nigeria three months ago, they will certainly have a spirit of revenge which can be important and that's normal,” he said.
“They didn't have some players who are there now: Ekong, the captain, Osimhen who will be there this time, he wasn't there last time, and behind them they also have contributions, Ola Aina is there. It will be a stronger team than the one we beat in June in Abidjan. We are wary.”
He further added, “In addition, at home, they have the obligation to get a result now after a series of draws or even defeats. There was another change of coach, that's it, so we will prepare well. It's not because we know the opponents that it will be easy to beat them. It will be a difficult match, but we are preparing well.”
Rohr has expressed concern about Tijani Mohammed's availability due to a sprained ankle but is hopeful for his return in the second match.
“We are a little worried about his participation in Nigeria, but maybe for the second match. We are working so that he recovers quickly from his sprained ankle.”
