Nigeria vs Zimbabwe: Five Super Eagles stars who can break the Warriors in Unity Cup opener

Published on by

The Super Eagles of Nigeria take on Zimbabwe today in the opening game of the 2026 Unity Cup, Afrik-Foot reports.

It is a straight knockout fixture, with the winner advancing to the final to face either Jamaica or India. With high stakes right from kickoff, fans can expect plenty of fireworks as both teams leave everything on the pitch to secure a vital victory.

The encounter is tilted slightly in Nigeria’s favour due to their superior quality on paper and historical pedigree, but the Super Eagles will field a heavily altered squad. They will be without the services of some of their biggest stars, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Calvin Bassey.

Ahead of the clash, Afrik-Foot highlights five key players who must step up for Nigeria to overcome Zimbabwe.

1. Terem Moffi

The Porto forward is the most experienced striker currently in the Super Eagles camp, boasting two goals in 19 appearances for Nigeria.

Moffi is a physical, intelligent striker who excels with the ball at his feet. Lethal inside the penalty area, he will be definitely be determined to pounce on any opportunity that comes his way.

He also has plenty of personal motivation; with a potential summer transfer on the horizon and his next destination undecided, a standout performance today will do his prospects no harm.

2. Philip Otele

The tricky winger will be expected to provide the creative spark for Nigeria. He faces an intriguing battle on the left flank, where he is set to go head-to-head with Zimbabwe’s Jordan Zemura.

Otele has the pace and strength to match his marker. In fact, Zimbabwe could find themselves in serious trouble if Nigeria catches them on the counter with Otele driving the ball forward. Much like Moffi, he is playing for a summer move and will undoubtedly empty his tank on the pitch today.

3. Femi Azeez

The English Championship star is coming off a brilliant season with Millwall, where he registered 11 goals and eight assists in 35 appearances. His fine form has made him a top transfer target for mid-table Premier League clubs.

Expected to make his international debut today, Azeez will be tasked with orchestrating Nigeria’s attack from the middle of the park.

Quick, direct, and a talented dribbler, he possesses an impressive eye for goal and the ability to whip in dangerous crosses. Super Eagles fans should keep a close eye on him during this tournament; if the Zimbabwean backline gives him space, he will ruthlessly exploit it.

4. Chibuike Nwaiwu

Following a stellar campaign with Trabzonspor, Nwaiwu will look to translate his club form onto the international stage.

The coaching staff will be banking on him to anchor the defense, relying not just on his technical performance but also his leadership qualities. Nwaiwu is comfortable on the ball and possesses a commanding aerial presence. While that dominance provides assurance at the back, it also makes him a potent weapon for Nigeria during attacking set-pieces.

5. Tochukwu Nnadi

The 22-year-old midfielder is another player capable of making a significant impact on both ends of the pitch.

Nnadi is a tireless battler in the engine room. Though he isn’t the most imposing figure physically, he reads the game beautifully and releases the ball with impressive speed and precision. Depending on how he is deployed, his late runs could also provide an extra goalscoring threat in the final third.
