Former Super Eagles defender Shehu Abdullahi has voiced his hopes that his return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will inspire other Super Eagles players to follow suit.
Abdullahi began his professional career with Kano Pillars in 2012, one of Nigeria's most successful football clubs. After two years at the club, the defensive midfielder ventured abroad to continue his career.
The 31-year-old returned to Kano Pillars last week, joining his long-time friend and national team captain, Ahmed Musa.
His last professional engagement was with Bulgarian side Levski Sofia, but he had been without a club since January 2023 before returning to the NPFL.
Abdullahi urges Super Eagles to boost NPFL
Ahead of their fixture against Akwa United, Abdullahi called on his fellow Super Eagles stars to consider returning to the NPFL, stating it would improve the league and provide a platform for younger players to learn from seasoned professionals.
“Thats what the captain (Ahmed Musa) is always saying about coming back: if you have the chance to, come and play so that you can improve the league, help the young ones, the coaches as well, thats in the league. I think all the people in Nigeria are now proud and happy about it.
So we’re calling on our colleagues: when ever you are at home, you want to recover; you want to get yourself back. Instead of staying at home, I think it’s better to come out to play. At least the young ones can learn from you,” Shehu said.
The defender expressed his delight in rejoining Kano Pillars, describing the club as one with deep sentimental value for him.
Abdullahi revealed that coming back to Kano, where his football journey began, feels like returning home.
He emphasised how grateful he and Musa are for the overwhelming support from fans, both during their time in Europe and since their return, and expressed their hope to give back to the local league.
