NPFL MD 16: As it happened
Nasarawa United 1-0 Lobi Stars ( 07 December)
Nasarawa United bounced back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lobi Stars in the North Central derby on Saturday. Qamal Adegoke was the hero of the day, netting the decisive goal in the 12th minute—his second of the season.
The hosts entered the game on the back of a 2-3 defeat to Heartland FC the previous week but showed resilience to secure a crucial win. With this result, Nasarawa United have now claimed two victories in their last five matches, suffering three losses in the process.
Sunshine Stars 0-1 Shooting Stars ( 07 December)
Shooting Stars earned a crucial 1-0 away victory over Sunshine Stars in an exhilarating South West derby at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, on Saturday.
Otakho Aghahowa provided the decisive moment, scoring just two minutes shy of the half-hour mark to secure the win. The result marked the Oluyole Warriors' first away triumph of the season and ended a disappointing run in South West derbies, following previous losses to Ikorodu City and Remo Stars.
Under the stewardship of Gbenga Ogunbote, Shooting Stars also celebrated back-to-back victories for the first time this campaign, signalling a positive shift in form.
Meanwhile, Sunshine Stars extended their winless run in the league to three matches, leaving them desperate for a turnaround.
Plateau United 3-2 Heartland Owerri ( 08 December)
Plateau United staged a remarkable comeback to secure a thrilling victory over visiting Heartland FC on Matchday 16. The hosts initially went ahead through Sunday Anthony, who capitalised on Daniel Itodo's trademark long throw to head in the opener.
However, Heartland turned the game around with a quickfire brace from Tobi Iyanda in the 53rd and 57th minutes, giving the Naze Millionaires a temporary lead.
Anthony struck again in the 69th minute to level the scores, setting the stage for a dramatic finale. Mafeng Pam delivered the decisive blow in the dying moments, sealing all three points for Plateau United in a pulsating encounter.
Kano Pillars 1-0 Katsina United ( 08 December)
Kano Pillars asserted their dominance over neighbours Katsina United with a narrow 1-0 victory in the North-West derby at the Sani Abacha Stadium. Abba Adam’s decisive strike in the 34th minute secured the win for the ‘Sai Masu Gida' boys. This marked Pillars’ first home triumph of the campaign, following a temporary relocation of their games to Katsina State due to ongoing renovations at their home stadium.
Abia Warriors 2-1 Niger Tornadoes ( 08 December)
In Umuahia, Abia Warriors secured a 2-1 victory over Niger Tornadoes in a hard-fought contest.
Ijoma Antoine put the hosts ahead in the 29th minute, and their lead was extended in the 69th minute when Tornadoes' Ernest Onyeka accidentally scored an own goal. The visitors pulled one back in stoppage time through Ahmed Family's well-taken penalty, but it was not enough to deny Abia Warriors all three points.
Bayelsa United 1-0 Irokodu City ( 08 December)
At the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa United brought Ikorodu City’s six-game unbeaten run to an end with a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Rabiu Abdullahi delivered the decisive strike in the 79th minute, securing all three points for the Prosperity Boys. The win moves Bayelsa United to 10th on the table with 21 points, just three points behind fourth-placed Ikorodu City, who remain on 24 points.
Enugu Rangers 1-0 Rivers United ( 08 December)
Enugu Rangers edged Rivers United 1-0 in a keenly contested encounter at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, thanks to Collins Ugwueze’s well-taken strike in the 16th minute.
The win solidifies Rangers’ hold on third place in the league standings, with 27 points from 16 matches. Rivers United, currently second on the table, found it difficult to break through the resolute defence of their determined hosts.
Despite scoring three goals in their last five outings, the visitors failed to pose a significant attacking threat, ending their impressive four-match unbeaten streak.
Remo Stars 2-0 El Kanemi Warriors ( 08 December)
Remo Stars reclaimed their position at the top of the table with a commanding 2-0 victory over El Kanemi Warriors at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Sunday.
Peter Onuoha opened the scoring in the 31st minute, expertly finishing after a precise pass from Kolawole Oladipo. El Kanemi goalkeeper Adebiyi Obassa delivered an impressive performance, making several key saves to keep his side in contention.
The hosts doubled their advantage just before the break, with Franck Mawuena heading home Ibrahim Abubakar’s perfectly delivered cross. Mawuena had a chance to secure a brace in the 64th minute but narrowly missed the target.
In the dying moments, Obassa once again came to El Kanemi's rescue, denying the visitors a late consolation.
Akwa United 1-1 Bendel Insurance ( 09 December)
Akwa United and Bendel Insurance, two struggling sides, played out a 1-1 draw in an intense encounter. Playing at home, Akwa United took an early lead in the 16th minute through Chijoke Alaekwe, delighting the home crowd.
However, Bendel Insurance responded swiftly, equalising in the 30th minute courtesy of Stanley Okoroma.
Despite the shared points, Akwa United remains in 19th position, while Bendel Insurance stays 18th due to a superior goal difference. Both teams are tied on 16 points
Kwara United p-p Enyimba (postponed)
The NPFL has announced the indefinite postponement of the matchday 16 fixture between Kwara United and Enyimba International, originally slated for December 8 in Ilorin.
League organisers cited Enyimba’s participation in the CAF Confederation Cup as the reason for the rescheduling. The People’s Elephant hoated Egypt’s Zamalek at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday, coinciding with the initially planned league match.
