NPFL MD 19: As it happened
Bayelsa United 0-1 Abia Warriors ( 28 December)
Abia Warriors secured an impressive away victory with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Bayelsa United at the Sampson Siasia Stadium on Saturday.
Despite the absence of key players Odinaka Anaeto, Prince Okorie, and Chinemerem Meme Okike due to injuries, the Warriors displayed remarkable resilience to inflict a second consecutive defeat on their opponents.
Kenneth Sheddy’s decisive 27th-minute goal proved enough to separate the sides, earning the Warriors a vital three points on the road.
El-Kanemi Warriors 1-0 Kano Pillars ( 29 December)
El Kanemi Warriors bounced back from their defeat to Sunshine Stars last weekend, securing a crucial 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars at the El-Kanemi Stadium on Sunday.
Umar Al Amin’s 39th-minute strike was enough to earn the Warriors all three points in a closely contested encounter.
This victory marks El Kanemi Warriors’ second win in their last five matches, having previously suffered two defeats and drawn one.
The three points propelled them to fourth place in the standings with 29 points, while Kano Pillars remain in eighth position with 25 points. The win offers a much-needed boost to El Kanemi as they look to maintain momentum ahead of the second half of the season.
Niger Tornadoes 0-1 Enugu Rangers (29 December)
Defending champions Enugu Rangers clinched a vital 1-0 away victory against Niger Tornadoes in Minna during their Matchday 19 NPFL fixture.
Bouncing back from a disappointing home loss to Shooting Stars in their previous outing, the reigning champions stunned the Ikon Allah Boys to return to winning ways.
The decisive moment came in the 33rd minute when former Niger Tornadoes star Bashir Usman found the back of the net against his former club, securing all three points for the Flying Antelopes.
Both clubs will maintain their respective positions following the clash, with Rangers International holding onto fourth place with 31 points, while Niger Tornadoes remain in ninth position with 24 points.
Ikorodu City 2-1 Sunshine Stars ( 29 December)
Ikorodu City secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunshine Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday, bringing an end to their three-match winless streak.
The hosts took the lead in the 39th minute when Shola Adelani capitalised on sustained pressure to find the back of the net. However, the advantage was short-lived, as Chidozie Iwudu rose to head home from Seth Mayi’s corner in first-half stoppage time, leveling the scores at 1-1.
The second half was a tense affair, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find the back of the net during regular time. Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, the referee awarded Ikorodu City a penalty deep into added time, sparking fierce protests from the visiting Sunshine Stars.
After a lengthy delay, Rivio Ayemwenre coolly converted the decisive spot-kick in the 90+13th minute, sealing the win for Ikorodu City. The victory moves the home side to sixth place on the NPFL table with 28 points from 19 matches, marking a crucial return to form.
Katsina United 1-0 Nasarawa United( 29 December)
Katsina United delivered a commanding performance to secure a crucial 1-0 victory over Nasarawa United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
Azeez Falolu emerged as the hero for the home side, finding the net in the 73rd minute to seal a well-earned victory.
The result marked Katsina United’s second win in five matches, bolstering their campaign as they aim to climb the NPFL standings.
For Nasarawa United, the defeat deepens their struggles, marking their second loss in five games and leaving them rooted at the bottom of the 20-team table.
Lobi Stars 0-1 Heartland Owerri ( 29 December)
Lobi Stars were unable to capitalise on their home advantage, settling for a goalless draw against a determined Heartland Owerri side.
The home team entered the fixture aiming to bounce back from last weekend's defeat to Bendel Insurance but struggled to break down a resolute Heartland defence.
The visitors, coming off a loss to Akwa United, were equally motivated to avoid back-to-back defeats and succeeded in frustrating Lobi Stars throughout the match.
With the draw, Heartland now occupy 14th position on the NPFL table with 23 points, while Lobi Stars remain in 17th place with 20 points. Both teams will need to find consistency in the coming weeks to improve their standings and avoid the threat of relegation.
Remo Stars 2-1 Akwa United ( 29 December)
Remo Stars reinforced their position at the summit of the NPFL table with a determined 2-1 victory over Akwa United in Ikenne on Sunday. The Sky Blue Stars made an electrifying start, as Ibrahim Shuaibu calmly converted a penalty in the 3rd minute, giving the home side an early advantage.
Akwa United, however, showcased their resilience, equalising through Kabir Osoba in first-half stoppage time to set the stage for an intense second half.
Refusing to settle for a draw, Remo Stars pressed relentlessly for a decisive goal.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Raymond Tochukwu Michael struck the winner, securing a crucial three points for the hosts.
The win not only extends Remo Stars' unbeaten streak at home but also underscores their defensive strength, with just one goal conceded in their last seven home matches. They now lead the title race with 36 points, ahead of Rivers United (33 points) and Shooting Stars (31 points).
Shooting Stars 1-0 Kwara United ( 29 December)
Shooting Stars maintained their impressive run of form with a narrow 1-0 triumph over Kwara United, courtesy of Adam Mustapha Agba’s decisive strike just before halftime.
The victory marks the Oluyole Warriors' fifth consecutive win, building on their success against Enugu Rangers last weekend.
With this result, Shooting Stars conclude the first half of the season in third place on the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table, amassing 33 points. Their stellar form is highlighted by a five-match winning streak.
In contrast, Kwara United finish the first half of the season in 12th position with 23 points, having endured a mixed run of two wins and three losses in their last five outings.
Rivers United 1-1 Plateau United ( 30 December)
Rivers United missed a golden opportunity to draw level with league leaders Remo Stars, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Plateau United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Monday.
Vincent Temitope gave the visitors a shock lead in the 51st minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to silence the home crowd. Handsome Surveyor, however, rescued a point for Rivers United with a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time, preventing a complete upset.
The hosts entered the match three points behind Remo Stars and were expected to secure a win against a Plateau United side that has struggled on the road this season.
A victory would have brought Rivers United level on points with the league leaders and provided significant momentum heading into the second half of the season.
Instead, the result keeps Rivers United in second place with 34 points, two adrift of Remo Stars. Plateau United, on the other hand, remain mired in 16th position with 20 points, their struggles on the road continuing to define their campaign.
Enyimba 0-0 Bendel Insurance (31 December)
Enyimba’s struggles extended into another match as they were held to a goalless draw by Bendel Insurance at the Enyimba International Stadium on Tuesday.
There were plenty of huffing and puffing from the home side but very little in the way of cutting edge in the box. One or two chances went begging in the early minutes of the game with Ekene Awazie as the worst culprit.
The second half was no different from the first as Enyimba's attack kept spurning chances that came their way.
The result marked a continuation of the People’s Elephant’s winless streak, now stretching to nine games across all competitions—a run that recently led to the dismissal of manager Yemi Olarenwaju and the appointment of Stanley Eguma as the new head coach.
With the stalemate, Enyimba remain ninth on the NPFL table with 24 points, though they have three outstanding matches to play. Bendel Insurance, on the other hand, sit precariously in 15th place with 21 points.
