The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has thrown up a few stars this season, as well as seeing the re-emergence of veteran stars who have continued to show what they are made of.

Kano Pillars midfielder and captain Rabiu Ali does not show any sign of slowing down despite being in his 40s, while newbies like Kazeem Ogunleye and Andrew Idoko have also steadily carved a niche for themselves in the league.

Five NPFL stars shining brightly

With six games left in the season, here are five players who have performed credibly well for their clubs as the league enters the final stretch.

Johnson Nmecha – Abia Warriors

Abia Warriors' impressive run in the NPFL this season has many contributing factors, but one name stands out – Johnson Nmecha. The 25-year-old goalkeeper has emerged from relative obscurity to become a key figure for the Umuahia side.

Nmecha's journey to the top flight began at Cynosure FC, where his talent caught the eye of Abia Warriors scouts. Despite lacking prior NPFL experience, his commanding presence and reflexes during pre-season convinced the club to make him their number one.

Nmecha's calm demeanour hides a world-class shot-stopper's instincts. He's equally comfortable with the ball at his feet, initiating attacks with his excellent distribution skills.

A vocal leader, Nmecha marshals his defence with authority, and his aerial dominance is a constant source of comfort for Abia Warriors.

The goalkeeper has announced himself in style this season. Crucial saves against Kano Pillars, Rivers United, Rangers, and Remo Stars have won over fans and earned him plaudits across Nigeria.

Nmecha's heroics have not only solidified Abia Warriors' position in the table but have also generated excitement for the future.

Interestingly, goalkeeping seems to run in the Nmecha family. Johnson's younger sister, Abigail, follows in his footsteps, guarding the net for Abia Angels FC in the NWPL.

Johnson Nmecha's story is one of unexpected talent blossoming under the spotlight. With his impressive debut season, Nmecha has not only secured Abia Warriors' present but has also positioned himself as a name to watch in Nigerian football.

Nenrot Silas – Plateau United

He needs no introduction to an average fan of the Nigeria Premier Football League, as he has been one of the standout performers this season for Plateau United so far.

Silas missed the first nine weeks of the campaign due to a botched transfer to Egypt, but since making his debut in the away game at Remo, he has been one of the shining lights of the team.

The former Nigeria U-20 international is blessed with pace and tricks which he uses to great effect down the flanks.

His combination with Albert Hilary in the Plateau attack has resulted in 17 goals between them and a 25-goal contribution from both frontmen.

Plateau coach Mbwas Mangut described Silas as a live-wire who loves to run at defenders and use his pace to great effect.

This has been evident in the second round of the season, scoring four goals with three assists while playing from the right side of the attack.

With seven goals so far this season, Silas told afrik-foot.com that he wants to hit double digits before the end of the season.

With six games to go, it is an achievable dream.

Hadi Haruna – Remo Stars

Remo Stars' attacking midfielder, Haruna Hadi, has been a revelation since getting a spot in the team following his loan spell at Stormers SC last season.

The midfielder had joined the Sky Blue Stars from FC One Rocket but struggled to lay claim to consistent inclusion in the team.

With his simple yet effective playing style, the second half of the 2023/24 season has seen Hadi bring a new dimension to the team's attack. His technical soundness and exceptional ball-passing ability have allowed him to control the midfield, dictating the flow of play and creating chances for his teammates.

In 14 games, Hadi has scored two goals and provided two assists. Though the numbers may look small, his movement on and off the ball has been impressive, often finding space and creating opportunities for himself and others. This has propelled the likes of Franck Mawuena and Sikiru Alimi to profit from his industry.

Whether starting or coming off the bench, Hadi has made an impact, featuring in the starting line-up 4 times and making 10 appearances as a substitute.

Hadi's creativity and vision have been a valuable asset to Remo Stars, and his stats only tell part of the story.

His work rate and dedication have earned him a place in the hearts of fans, and he continues to be a key player for the team.

As the season reaches its climax, expect Hadi to remain a driving force in Remo Stars' quest for their first-ever NPFL title, unlocking defences and creating scoring opportunities with his exceptional skill and vision.

Sani Suleiman – Akwa United

Akwa United may be facing a tough season currently sitting in 18th place, but 17-year-old Suleiman Sani has been a ray of sunshine for the club.

Signed from Wikki Tourists in the second half of the season, Sani has exploded onto the scene with a remarkable six goals.

Sani's talent is undeniable. Hailing from the GBS Academy in Jos, he boasts a blistering pace and exceptional close control—a rare combination for such a young player.

These skills have already caught the eye of scouts from Belgium and Norway, and he'll likely be moving on from the Nigerian league next season.

Sani's signature move—a shoulder drop and shimmy—is a nightmare for defenders and a joy for Akwa United fans.

While the team struggles, Suleiman has been a bright spot, showcasing his immense ability and leaving fans excited to see what the future holds for this rising star.

Kenneth Igboke – Rangers International

The 19-year-old left-back for Nigeria Premier Football League side Rangers International has been making waves in the second round of the NPFL season.

Though he started the season slowly,  Igboke has emerged as a promising talent for the ‘Flying Antelopes' and one of the best performers in the second half of the season.

In his second season with the senior side, Igboke showcased his potential during an away NPFL fixture against Niger Tornadoes in the 2022/2023 season, where he impressed with his stellar performance.

Since then, he has consistently delivered impressive outings, cementing his place in the starting line-up.

Having been discovered playing football in the streets of Nsukka, Enugu State, Igboke's journey from the Rangers Feeders team to the senior squad is a testament to his talent and dedication.

His attacking prowess as a left-back has been evident, with two goals to his credit this term, including strikes against Heartland and Akwa United.

Igboke's ability to cause problems for opposing right-backs, coupled with his incisive crosses during games, has made him a stand-out player for Rangers International.

As he continues to hone his skills and contribute to the success of the team, Igboke remains a player to watch in the Nigerian football scene.
