Nwaiwu to EPL: Why Fulham is better move than Palace

Fulham and Crystal Palace are battling to sign Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu from Turkish side Trabzonspor, Afrik-Foot reports.

However, the two Premier League clubs are approaching the transfer in very different ways.

Fulham have been working on the deal for several weeks and are currently the favourites to land the 22-year-old. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, have only recently entered the race after changes to their defensive plans opened the door for another centre-back.

The transfer could make Chibuike Nwaiwu the most expensive Nigerian defender in history, with Trabzonspor demanding between €30 million and €35 million before agreeing to sell. Both Premier League clubs believe Nwaiwu has the pace, strength and defensive qualities needed to succeed in England, but only one destination appears to offer him the clearest route to regular football.

Nwaiwu: Fulham remain in pole position despite Palace interest

Fulham’s interest has moved much further than Crystal Palace’s. The London club have already reached a verbal agreement with Nwaiwu on personal terms for a contract expected to run until 2030.

Manager Álvaro Arbeloa is keen to strengthen his defence after the departure of Issa Diop to Ipswich Town. Trabzonspor have already rejected two earlier offers from Fulham, but negotiations continue. Fulham’s latest proposal is believed to be worth between €27 million and €30 million, with an additional 15 percent sell-on clause. However, the Turkish club remain firm in their valuation and are holding out for at least €30 million.

Crystal Palace only joined the race after Maxence Lacroix moved closer to completing a reported £52 million transfer to Chelsea. Palace are looking to strengthen their defence, but Nwaiwu is understood to be one of several names on their shortlist.

Chrislain Matsima of Augsburg remains Palace’s preferred target. If negotiations for the French defender fail, Palace are expected to increase their efforts to sign the Nigerian international and could attempt to outbid Fulham.

Why Fulham appears to be the smarter career move

Although Crystal Palace currently offer greater stability in the Premier League and have established themselves as regular challengers for European qualification, Fulham may provide the better environment for Nwaiwu’s development.

At Fulham, the Nigerian defender is expected to walk straight into the starting line-up following Diop’s departure. Arbeloa has reportedly identified him as a key part of his defensive rebuild, meaning he would likely receive regular minutes from the beginning of the season.

The situation at Crystal Palace is different. Even if the club eventually move for Nwaiwu, he is not their first-choice defensive target. That creates uncertainty over his role and raises the possibility of spending significant time on the bench while competing with established defenders.

As a 22-year-old hoping to cement his place in the Super Eagles squad, consistent Premier League football could be more valuable than joining a club with slightly higher ambitions.

If Fulham can reach Trabzonspor’s asking price in the coming days, they remain in the best position to complete the signing. Based on the current state of negotiations and the football opportunities available, Fulham looks like the destination that offers Nwaiwu the best chance to grow into one of Nigeria’s leading defenders.
