Ahead of Barnsley's EFL League One showdown with Wigan Athletic, Kelechi Nwakali has opened up about a crucial weakness in his game.
The Nigeria midfielder, who has played primarily as a holding midfielder, is aware that improving certain aspects of his play is essential if he is to make a significant impact at Oakwell.
Despite his promising start at Barnsley, Nwakali has faced challenges, with limited appearances since joining the Darrell Clarke side from Portuguese club Chaves.
As Barnsley prepares for the upcoming match, Nwakali acknowledges the need to work on his physicality and fitness in order to break into Clarke's preferred midfield pairing.
What is Kelechi Nwakali's Achilles heel?
The 26-year-old midfielder, who was quoted by Barnsley Chronicle, said, “The most important thing is football is played in two phases.
“I know when it comes to the attacking part, I am very good. But I have to improve my defending. I have been working with the gaffer and the backroom staff to improve that.
“To be able to play, you have to be fit, and it’s all about physicality in League One.”
“The most important thing is to be ready to help the team and give a good response. I have been waiting for the opportunity. I said to myself, ‘It’s time to take this opportunity, but don’t be selfish; do the right thing to help the team.”
The Nigerian midfielder went on to say that he is capable of playing as a ten or an eight, though he has primarily played as a six.
He emphasised that the team always comes first, with individual roles secondary.
While expressing his desire to feature in more games, he also acknowledged that the final decision lies with the coach.
