Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is expected to man the sticks for Udinese when they face Lecce in their seventh game of the 2026/27 Italian Serie A season at the Bluenergy Stadium on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The 26-year-old was the central figure in Udinese’s fourth straight Serie A defeat at Torino on October 12, rushing out of his line and colliding with team-mate Nicolo Bertola in the second half.
That mix-up let substitute Sandro Kulenovic walk the ball into an empty net for the winner, just minutes after Jurgen Ekkelenkamp had dragged Udinese level. But before that error, he had been one of the best players at the club.
This weekend, he will now be looking to redeem himself in front of the home fans in Udine.

Udinese vs Lecce: Match Preview
Kosta Runjaic’s side sit 15th in Serie A with four points from six matches, and their worst defensive record after six rounds since 1961 with thirteen goals already conceded.
That losing run now stretches to four games running after defeats to Lazio, Inter Milan, Cagliari and Torino in succession, a sharp fall from the four points Udinese had banked from their opening two matchdays, when a different campaign still looked possible.

Lecce, by contrast, arrive in thirteenth place on six points, a modest return but still their best tally at this stage of a season since 2023, after a 1-2 home defeat to a previously winless Bologna side and a 0-3 reverse at AC Milan either side of the international break.

Neither club has found any rhythm this season, which makes Okoye’s form between the posts, and whether he can steady himself after Turin, the detail most worth following for Nigerian fans in a fixture that otherwise carries little weight outside Udine and Lecce.
History favours the hosts in this particular pairing. Udinese have won four of the last five league meetings with Lecce, including a 3-2 win at the Via del Mare last season, and have failed to score at home against the Salentini only once since 2001.
That record offers little comfort to Okoye himself, with Udinese’s own goal tally having dried up alongside everyone else’s form, and with midfielder Jakub Piotrowski also sidelined after cardiac ablation surgery, the goalkeeper has fewer senior team-mates than usual to lean on protecting a lead.

There is no genuine fitness question hanging over Okoye, but the Torino error has put his name in the Italian press for the wrong reasons.
That comes just as their four-match losing run demands a response, and Runjaic will be watching closely to see how his goalkeeper reacts under a home crowd already growing restless with the club’s start to the campaign.

Nigerian Spotlight: Okoye’s Season So Far
Okoye’s save count tells a different story from his Torino evening. He made 20 saves across his first five Serie A appearances this term, the eighth-highest tally of any goalkeeper in the division.

That reflects just how often Udinese’s defence has left him exposed, rather than any lack of application on his own part.
He has started and finished every one of his club’s six league matches this season, the only ever-present outfield or goalkeeping shirt for Runjaic, with back-up Bartosz Mrozek yet to be trusted with a single Serie A minute.

| Twenty saves from his first five Serie A outings, eighth-most of any goalkeeper in the division, though the rushed challenge that set up Torino’s winner on October 12 left his last outing as his worst mark of the campaign. | |
That contrast, a goalkeeper doing more defending than almost anyone else in Serie A yet now facing questions over a single error, is exactly what Nigerian followers of Okoye will be watching for.
Lecce have scored in half of their six league matches this season. Nikola Stulic, their main central striker, has himself only just returned to the squad after a spell out with a muscle problem.
Captain-in-waiting Lassana Coulibaly leads Lecce’s own scoring charts with two goals from midfield, so Okoye will have more than one route to worry about if Eusebio Di Francesco’s side find an attacking foothold in Udine.
Di Francesco kept Lecce up last season after two earlier relegations at Venezia and Frosinone, and he will fancy his side’s chances of frustrating an Udinese team low on confidence.

Score Prediction: Udinese vs Lecce
| 🔮 Udinese 1 – 1 Lecce |
| Neither side has found a settled attacking rhythm this season, and a shared point suits two struggling teams more readily than a home win built on a defence that Okoye alone has kept afloat. Likely scorers: Jurgen Ekkelenkamp for Udinese, Nikola Stulic for Lecce if he starts after his return to the squad. For Okoye, a second-half shutout after an early concession would do just as much for his standing in Udine as a clean sheet, given how little protection he has had from the players in front of him this season. |
