3 traits that puts Onuachu ahead of Franculino in Trabzonspor’s lineup

Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu is facing a real battle to retain his place in Trabzonspor’s starting lineup following the arrival of Franculino Djú, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Nigerian striker rejoined Trabzonspor on a permanent deal from English club Southampton last summer after previously spending the 2023-24 season on loan at the Turkish side.

The 32-year-old took the Turkish league by storm during his first spell at the club and enjoyed a remarkable individual campaign. He won the league’s Golden Boot and Goal of the Season award while also helping Trabzonspor to another Turkish Cup triumph.

However, the former Genk striker has not reached those same heights so far this season. He is currently on a five-game run without a goal across all competitions for Trabzonspor, while speculation over a possible move away from the club has continued to grow amid interest from Saudi Arabia

Trabzonspor have also strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Franculino Djú from Danish side Midtjylland, giving Onuachu even more competition for a place in the starting lineup.

While Franculino’s arrival has increased competition in attack, there are three major qualities that could still give the Super Eagles forward the edge as Trabzonspor’s first-choice striker.

Onuachu’s proven record at Trabzonspor

One of the biggest advantages Onuachu has over Franculino is his proven record at Trabzonspor. The Nigerian forward has already enjoyed a successful spell at the club and has shown on more than one occasion that he has what it takes to perform in the Turkish Super Lig.

The former Southampton forward knows what is expected of him at Trabzonspor and has previously shown that he can thrive in the league. He is familiar with the club, the atmosphere, the stadiums and the demands that come with playing in Turkey.

Although he is currently going through a difficult run in front of goal, his previous performances suggest that it could only be a matter of time before he rediscovers his form.

Franculino, on the other hand, has only just arrived at the club and may need time to adapt to Trabzonspor’s style of play and the demands of the Turkish league.

That experience and proven record could give Onuachu an important advantage in the battle for the starting role.

Onuachu understands the team

Another major factor in Onuachu’s favour is his understanding of the Trabzonspor team.

Onuachu’s physicality and height

At around 2.01 metres tall, Onuachu is one of the tallest players in the Turkish Super Lig, and his physical presence gives Trabzonspor something different in attack.

His height and strength make him a difficult opponent for defenders, particularly in aerial duels. He can hold up the ball, bring his teammates into play and provide a strong focal point in attack.
