Super Eagles: Red-hot Orban making case for belated return ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Published on by , updated on

Super Eagles forward Gift Orban has taken to the Bundesliga like a duck to water, scoring his fourth goal of the German top-flight campaign as Hoffenheim came from behind to draw 1-1 with Stuttgart on Sunday.

The 22-year-old striker has rediscovered his form after struggling during his time with Lyon in France, with his pace and exceptional positional awareness inside the box making him a standout player already for his new club.

Partnering with Andrej Kramarić, Orban continues to create and convert chances at an impressive rate.

The goal he scored against Stuttgart was not only crucial for the team but also significant for his personal tally. It marked his fourth goal in just seven games, putting greater distance between Hoffenheim and relegation.

Should Gift Orban’s current form earn him a recall to the Super Eagles?

With the way things stand, it would not be surprising if Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle includes Orban in his squad for upcoming fixtures, and deservedly so.

Since his debut call-up in 2023, Orban has not featured in subsequent squads due to administrative hurdles that have since been resolved.

Now that those issues are behind him, there's no reason why Orban should not get another chance to represent Nigeria.

Nigeria's attack has lacked consistency in recent matches, managing only four goals across the first four games in World Cup qualifying (which resumes in March) and five in five matches in qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Key forward Taiwo Awoniyi is sidelined with injury at the moment, Sadiq Umar is still finding his rhythm at Valencia, and Terem Moffi is only just returning to action. In light of these challenges, Orban’s impressive performances could make him an attractive option for Chelle.

Victor Osimhen remains Nigeria’s go-to striker, but his partnership with Victor Boniface hasn’t clicked as expected yet.

Given the lacklustre performances from other forwards, Orban’s inclusion seems justified.

When Nigeria faces Rwanda and Zimbabwe next month, they’ll need all the firepower they can muster.

Every point counts as the Super Eagles aim to claw their way back into contention for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Just like how Orban is helping Hoffenheim fend off relegation, he might also play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s quest for qualification.

The Super Eagles find themselves in a tricky position in Group C, and securing victories in the remaining matches is non-negotiable.

If Orban brings the same level of determination and skill to the national team that he displays for Hoffenheim, he could very well be the spark Nigeria needs to ignite their attacking prowess once again.
