The point at Wycombe Wanderers a week later was a more encouraging watch, Cleverley’s side digging in for a share of the spoils away from home, and Evans marked the occasion with his first goal since arriving from Mansfield Town.

Plymouth were then eliminated from the Carabao Cup in midweek, losing 4-2 at home to Coventry City after squandering a fightback, with 17-year-old academy graduate Joe Mwaro handed a striking debut and Amaechi coming off the bench to score with a thumping finish before the visitors pulled away late on.

That result at least stopped the rot, even if Plymouth sat 22nd in the table after those two matches, with almost the entire season still to unfold.

Bradford’s start has been built on the sort of defensive discipline that carried them so close to an instant Championship return last season.

A 2-0 win over Peterborough United on the opening weekend, in which new signing Macaulay Gillesphey headed home from a corner before Nick Powell added a second within minutes of coming off the bench, was followed by a 1-0 victory in the Yorkshire derby at Sheffield Wednesday, Aden Baldwin scoring the only goal early in the second half from a corner won by Matthew Pennington.

Both results extended a run that, allowing for the Carabao Cup detour in midweek, has left Bradford unbeaten in all competitions and, remarkably, without conceding a single goal in any of their first four matches this season.

There is a pleasing subplot to Bradford’s defensive solidity for Plymouth supporters.

Gillesphey, the man at the centre of it, spent three seasons at Home Park and was part of the Argyle side that won the League One title with a record 101 points in 2022-23, scoring twice that title-winning season alongside other memorable goals during his time at the club including an FA Cup header against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
