Asisat Oshoala transfer: Super Falcons star makes shock Barcelona exit

An end of an era has come at Barcelona’s Femini side as their Nigeria striker, Asisat Oshoala, has departed the Catalan side after five years with the club.

Oshoala, who also played for Arsenal and Liverpool, had been in the news lately about an imminent departure from Spain to seek a new adventure, and it has now come to fruition.

The Super Falcons striker has ended her union with the Spanish team to head stateside to join NWSL expansion side Bay FC in San Jose.

The 29-year-old prolific Nigerian striker has showcased her prowess in the current season for Barcelona, making 14 appearances and finding the net eight times.

Oshoala left Nigeria's mark on European football

Over her impressive five-year stint with Barcelona from February 2019 to January 2024, Oshoala scored a remarkable 107 goals in 149 appearances, leaving an indelible mark on the club.

Despite having a contract with Barcelona, the two parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate her contract so she can join her new club in America.

She is reportedly set to sign a two-year deal with the NWSL club with an option of a one-year extension worth about $150,000 and has already arrived in the United States ahead of her unveiling.

Bay FC, the club Oshoala is set to join, is a new expansion team gearing up for its debut season in the NWSL in 2024.

Their home matches will be played at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, an 18,000-seat soccer-specific stadium shared with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Bay FC will hope Oshoala, alongside another new signing, the Venezuelan Deyna Castellanos, will help them succeed in the maiden campaign in the NWSL.

The new season is scheduled to start on March 17, with Bay FC facing Angel City in their season opener.
