Victor Osimhen: How Super Eagles star rated in Galatasaray’s win after Barcelona loss

Published on by

Victor Osimhen played the full 90 minutes as Galatasaray bounced back from their Champions League defeat to Barcelona with a narrow 1-0 victory away to Gençlerbirliği on Saturday.

The Super Eagles striker returned to domestic action looking to help his team recover from Tuesday’s crushing 4-1 home defeat against Barcelona. That damaging defeat left the Turkish champions without a point from their opening two Champions League matches this season.

However, Osimhen could not reproduce his usual attacking brilliance in Ankara, finishing the contest with a SofaScore rating of 6.8.

The Nigerian forward had also featured against Barcelona but struggled to make a decisive impact as Galatasaray suffered a disappointing European night.

Saturday’s encounter proved equally challenging for the visitors, who needed a late intervention to secure all three points.

Victor Osimhen’s numbers as Galatasaray scrape victory

Victor Osimhen registered seven shots against Gençlerbirliği, with two efforts on target, two blocked and three missing the target.

The 27-year-old completed 75 per cent of his passes, delivered two key passes and created one big chance that his teammates failed to convert.

He also contributed defensively, recording one clearance and one recovery while winning six of his 10 duels.

The performance came just days after Osimhen returned from a 35-day injury layoff, suggesting he still has work to do before reaching his best level.

The striker, already one of Africa’s finest ever, also received a yellow card after celebrating Galatasaray’s winning goal excessively.

Substitute Deniz Gül proved decisive in the 88th minute, forcing the opposition goalkeeper to turn the ball into his own net and sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Galatasaray also owed much of their victory to goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır, who kept the hosts at bay before the late breakthrough. He recorded six key saves, including four inside the penalty area, and finished with the highest rating on the pitch at 8.8.

Despite the victory, Osimhen suffered a personal setback as his remarkable scoring and assisting streak in the Turkish Super Lig came to an end.

Before Saturday’s match, he had registered at least one goal or assist in each of his previous 18 league appearances for Galatasaray, dating back to December. During that run, he recorded 18 goals and eight assists.

Osimhen will now hope to begin another productive streak when Galatasaray face Lille in the Champions League and Fenerbahçe in the Super Lig over the next nine days.
